Signed up for first obedience class I am SO excited and had to tell someone. I have signed Nick up for his first obedience class!! I am still waiting to hear back from the club to confirm his registration but hopefully they have a spot left for him! My Nick is going to be well behaved!!!! I can't wait!!! :) Has anyone else done group obedience classes? If so, I would love to hear about your experiences. Thanks! |
Wow that's great! I have done tons and tons of obedience training with Barney and Daisy over the years. Recently, they went back to puppy class at age 9 when Teddy joined us. They absolutely LOVE puppy classes. We've done advanced ones too with clicker training and stuff. Barney is very good at obedience (he even waves on command) as he is so food motivated. Daisy is good too but she gets bored. Teddy...well...he's another story LOL. He does know the COOKIE command very well LOL. I should mention that we always did off-leash socialization and obedience training. Well I hope you have a great time with Nick. Here is my secret for teaching your dog anything with reliability....forget treats like hard cookies and break out the tidbits of white meat chicken. I'm talking a tiny shred of chicken is a reward. I had all the puppies in class hanging out with me and all sitting and giving me their paws. All but my little Teddy Bumpkins who was too scared to eat his chicken in class :( Oh this is making me want to join up again. Teddy is not too old mentally for puppy class so I think I will!! |
Congrats! Have sooo much fun. I taught Jackson on my own but he is awesome when it comes to obedience and tricks because he's such a food-motivated dog. He knows over 20 tricks and commands. They are sooo much fun to work with and obedience and tricks really bond you with your dog, IMO :) I'm so excited to hear of Nick's progress throughout the classes! I've considered signing Jackson up for some kind of a group class just for fun! |
Good for you. Nick will benefit so much from these classes. I took Buddy at 6mos then continued training him myself over the years. He thrives on it. Does so much and listens very well. I just started working with a trainer, due to his resource guarding and it's just so interesting. I plan on signing him up for classes at her location so he can mingle with other dogs outside of his own environment when our private sessions are over. I am sure he'll love it, I know I will. Good luck and have fun, |
we did a 6 week class with each one of our babies. I have to say that Maggie May really benefitted from it, or rather we benefitted from it, she's a wild woman! lol Just a tip, our trainer told us to only feed a small amount of dinner before class as we used treats in class. Hot Rod got full and as a result his attention span didn't last. I wound up taking cooked fish for his treats so he would fill up so quickly. With Maggie, I cut up a zukes in like 4ths or smaller. She was on clicker training so she would get treated more. Good luck and have fun...it is amazing how they pick things up so fast. You'll really enjoy the class. :) |
Thanks for all the responses. I just got my confirmation email - Nick and I will be in our first class on March 18. So far it only has 3 other dogs in it. I am SO very excited. I was having some behavior issues with Nick so I contacted his breeder and she referred me to a local kennel club that she is a member of. They are the ones that have the class we are taking. It was cheaper than a group class at a pet supply store and I think it will be a little better structured, too. Nick is a little picky when it comes to food so I hope we don't have an issue there. I guess I will just have to find a treat he REALLY likes. Keep the tips coming! Any advise is greatly appreciated!!! :) |
Please let us know how it went, I've been considering joining one myself! |
I have my 4 month old signed up for puppy kindergarten March 13 for 6 weeks! Excited. |
Sadie and I have been taking classes for over a year now. She started in Puppy Kindergarden when she was a puppy. We love it! I plan to continue to take classes forever with her. She's had all the basics and two sessions of agility so far. She has learned so much and is so comfortable in so many situations. Really the best benefit though is it's our girls night out and we just love our time together - just the two of us. Congratulations!! |
