Barking problems Hi there, My seven month old really never barked too much until about a month or so ago. Not sure if it's "teen" angst or she's found her voice. I live in an apartment building and if she hears someone in the hallways she runs towards the door and barks. Or, if she hears barking outside she'll run to the window and bark. Now, it's nice to have a watchdog, especially in NYC but i can't seem to get her to keep quiet. Interstingly, she seems to do this more at night. I wonder if I need to tire her out a bit more?? I also have mice (YUCK!) and last night she was up and barking at 3 AM sniffing around at (what I imagine?) was a mouse. I don't want my neighbors to freak AND I do want to sleep. Any advice for calming the barking beast? Thank you! mb |
My Roxie is almost 10 months and barking is not a major problem, but she knows what I mean when I say " Quiet" at night. In her training class the instructor told us to use a spray bottle water to teach them "No Bark", but of course Roxie just loves the water so that was no help at all. The instructor's other suggestion was to put some coins in a can and shake it when they bark while telling them "No Bark". I know Roxie does not like the noise and will be quiet after that. You just have to be consistent. I am sure there are others who can offer advice also. Hope that helps. |
My 9month old just started with the barking too!! I have brought him with me to work since he was a newborn. He has now decided that he is going to bark all the time. I will look forward to the answers you get. |
me too, i cant stop lexi, she barks in the middle of the night at nothing.. water wont help, i tried a fly swatter. help us!!!! |
Roxie, Thanks for your advice. The coins in a bottle and the water worked when she was younger so I hope they will come through again. She really HATES water so that's good. I noticed other people posted with similar barking problems. Try Roxie's advice and let us know how it goes! |
Cool that you can take your dog to work! I wish I could do that! My Buffy sleeps most of the day so I'm tempted to sneak her in under my desk but then again she does suddenly get up run around like a maniac too. Do you have your own office / Does she have access to your whole company? Just curious. How did you convince your boss? Or, maybe you ARE the boss there! :-) |
I work at a small company and they are really good about it. We have a little office out back and I put up and baby gate and he stays in there. My problem is his barking he never used to do it and now he does. I'm going to try the coins in the can. I also think he is bored but he has plenty to chew toys and stuff. I got him a brumble ball and he played with it for the first two days now he hates it. :( I have noticed that he barks to get some attention so I think he is bored. |
Let us know how the coins work. I've tried the bottle with coins and it seems to be not so bad as a deterrent. My Buffy looks concerned when she just sees the bottle. ditto for the water bottle. But if our fur babies are bored, not sure what to do? Do you have time at lunch to take him for a walk or even better a run? I saw some "educational" dog toys at the Discovery Channel store. A soft colorful cloth square with different openings and 3 cloth balls to get inside. Also, a long cloth bone with 5 cloth rings on it... i haven't bought either of them yet but am considering it. They probably have the same things and maybe more to order from the Discovery Channel/Animal Planet web site??? Also, do you use the "Kong" toys. I put some salami squished down in it or a piece of dried chicket filet treat and getting the goodies out keeps her occupied. i know a lot of people put peanut butter in Kong toys as well but Buffy doesn't like it very much. |
Mine both bark aa lot. They go from window to window barking at any thing and every thing. I can raise my voice shake things at them nothing works except when I take and rolled up news paper and hit it loudly on the table top or my leg it gets their attention. then they settle down. Thats all that ever worked for us.They are not scared of the paper b/c they will come and bite at it and they are ready to play. But it does their attention. |
Barking is embarressing me I want to take Louie to my sons football games, but lately I have been getting very embarressed (sp) because he barks at EVERYONE! and naturally there are a lot of people there. I would like to try the spraying water at him approach but ewwww, I think I would feel really funny doing that in front of people. Maybe I will try it at home first when he barks whenever someone comes home and it will scare him enough not to bark outside at the games. |
The other thing you can do is take lots of things for him to chew on to keep him distracted. I save special rawhide chews, pork strips, etc for this purpose. |
