Biting each other!! My 2 little babies are now playing, playing, and playing together constantly, but, of course I (always) have a question. Occasionally, Gabby latches onto Tyler's neck and clamps down hard! Tyler cries, and I am between them trying to get Gabby to let go. It takes awhile, but then they are playing together again. Please tell me this is normal puppy play, and will get better!!!! |
I'm having the same problem with my two boys. The larger, jealous one is clamping down on his new little brother's neck. I have to keep a very close on them and when I can't, the smaller one goes in the xpen. :( |
My puppies in the litter play very rough too. One one gets rough and the other cries they usually stop. This is how they learn. |

Maximo is now about 15 months old, and our new addition (9 days) is about 8 months old. He just started this business last night of clamping down on little Teddy's neck. |
If they're clamping on to the neck, that's not playing......they are fighting....seperate them. |
my yorkie plays rough with our tzu who is just 10months old. Sometimes the yorkie does try and grab her by the neck , but my txu has already rolled over , and Suzi can't get a grip on all her hair she has. ONCE in a blue moon i hear Miely gagging , becaue Suzi is geteting her by the neck ... NOw, this has not happened in a long time. Miely does have her hiding spots where Suzi can't reach her. Such as the side of the couches. The Miely jumps on the couch next to me, and makes a little front paw move , to say catch me if u can to Suzi . Suzi barks at Miely when she hides or can;t get to her. It is funny to see that, and I know once Miely has had enough she can be safe from Suzi. BTW, Miely is even bigger then Suzi . |

This new development is such a disappointment...things had been going so well and steadily improving, then jealousy reared it ugly head last night. My older boy is really having a bad day today. |
You will have to watch them very close for a few weeks or months. Once the younger one catches up weight wise they should be okay. |
Thanks guys. Fantastic and helpful answers,,,,,, |
My two girls are littermates and have always wrestled, sometimes to the point of madness. They take turns trying to see which one can gnaw the others hind leg off first. But never do they ever go for the neck or throat or make each other yelp. They do sound like a hornet's nest when they fight, the way they growl in the back of their throats. It is a deafening buzzing. They tease each other, wrestle, fight over toys and then cuddle together to sleep. I've never seen either hurt or make the other cry out in pain so....so far so good. When I first brought them home as puppies, my 15lb cat took one of the 14oz puppies flipped her over and went for her throat. I stopped that in a hurry and never let the cat alone or near them again until they got larger than rodents... Throats and necks are usually considered kill moves in the animal kingdom. |
Thank goodness that only happened for first day or two. Now they play great together. I think it happened when Tyler (the little one) kicked Gabby's butt and he now takes up for himself. |
Ahhh, so they were establishing their necking...I mean pecking order...LOL |
