How hard is it to change a dogs name? Just curious -- how hard is it to change a dogs name, and is it not a good idea? |
How old is the dog? And how long have you had it? |
I brought home an 8 month old last week and changed his name. He responded to it immediately. The names both started with the same letter and sound, which may have helped. A few months ago someone adopted a rescue Yorkie who was several years old and had the same name as her daughter. Naturally, she wanted to change the dog's name. She chose something similar in sound and it worked. If you have affectionate nicknames that you use, just combine those with the new name and the dog should pick up rather quickly. |
You can do it. |
Maddie used to be a GIGI----------she was a year old when i adopted/rescued her----it only took a few days for her to know her new name. it also helped that when i said her name and she came i gave her a treat;) |
i changed all of my girls names except Meiah. It takes about 3 days of just using the new name. None of mine had a problem changing. All the rescues get new names no matter how old they are. My girls' new names were nothing like the names they came with...they don't care as long as you call them! :) I say go for it!! |
I have changed my dogs names before. They were still puppies at the time and they did fine with it. I just keept the new name sounding close to the original name.:animal36 |
I think changing the name helps make the new dog your in your mind as sticking with the one chosen by the previous owner means somebody else had them first. When we rescued our cat her name was Preciouse, couldn't see myself calling her that so it was changed to Lizzie in honour of my nan, it was her nickname, sems to fit her well-the cat that is. |
I'm not sure if I'm the one who the previous reply is talking about but when we got Miley Mae her name was "Ellie Mae". My daughter is Ellie so I thought it would be too confusing. She seems to have adjusted just fine. She was 7 months old when we got her. We just tried to stick with something a little similar. |
