Pack order, dominance
 
I just brought home an 8 month old boy, Teddy, and he is getting acquainted with my 14 + month old boy, Maximo. Both are neutered.

While playing, the younger Teddy will jump up on Maximo's back. Sometimes Maximo will roll over on his back on the floor and allow Teddy to jump on his belly.

Does this mean Teddy is establishing dominance, or is it possible the older Maximo is allowing all of this because he knows Teddy is kind of a puppy?

Apart from playtime, Maximo insists on coming first and he won't allow me to pick up Teddy. He goes ballistic if I do.

Congratulations on the new puppy, I can't answer your question, but it sounds like they are having fun together. I don't think a dog rolling on his back means he's giving up his dominance; I think it just means "you are not a threat". Does he always go ballistic when you pick up the puppy? I take care of my sons' dogs, and one of the goes ballistic when I pick up Joey, he's gradually gotten over it, and he's younger than Joey. Joey doesn't seem to mind when I pick up other dogs. Maybe if you could pick up Maximo first, he'd get over you picking up Teddy.

Alfie eing the older of my two by 8 monthe will also roll over on his ach during play with Rosie and has done since she was a pup. Though I have noticed now she is a year ols the balance is shifting, she will initiate play and rise herself above him putting her front feet on top of him, her tail stiff and over her ack in an act of dominance, this I try to correct immidiately as I dont wish it to get out of hand and lead to fighting. Right now she is 'singing' at me as she feels the need to ''claim'' her new bed by humping it which I wont allow as I want them to share.

Thank you Nancy for the congrats and the likely explanation for the behavior. That makes perfect sense to me.

Maximo allows me to pick up the puppy only if I carry them both at the same time and pick up Maximo first. This took a full day to achieve.

If I want to pick up only the puppy, Maximo attacks. Same thing when my father tries to pick up the puppy. We need to pick up the puppy to groom, and to try to solve the potty problems -- Maximo is guarding all of the piddle pads. Yes, Maximo's favorite things: his humans and his piddle pads. :p

I asked in another thread about rough play. When I see these signs -- putting front paws up on the back of the other (not mounting) -- should I discourage the boys?

My 2 already had a big fight over beds. LOL! 4 beds and they played musical beds. I hope one day they will cuddle together.

Lol, sounds like fun, I only have one, and just occasionally babysit, but one great thing about Yorkietalk, is that so many of our members have multiple dogs and can give you some advice on how to handle this. Guarding the pee pads, lol that's so funny! :D

my two do some rough play as well. Pixie jumps on Daisy's back biting her ears and Daisy spins Pixie onto the floor and Daisy rolls over and Pixie jumps one Daisy's Belly and Daisy tries to fling Pixie off with her paws. I get so worried that something bad is gonna happen.


What I do now is if they get to rough I give them a time out, I separate them for a few minutes and they calm down. I think when they get going sometimes they can't slow down.

It's like a two year old when they get going too wild they can't slow down until you slow them down. lol

Sounds exactly like my guys! LOL!

It is scary -- I keep thinking of broken legs, ripped ears, or concussions from hitting my heavy wood furniture. I'm starting to regret not having soft, plush furniture.

I think I'm going to try to reduce the intensity of playtime.

I like the idea of "time out" especially with 3 "teapot" size (8/10/12 lb) pups thundering through the house:D or wrestling with each other. Haven't seen any sign/s of dominance though with 1 lady pup and two guys.
