Lexi's barking at dog parks Lexi has been developing a bad habit when we go to the offleash. Inside the house she's generally very quite and won't bark without reason. However (and this just started lately) she starts barking her head off at the dog park. As soon as I let her off leash, she starts barking - not at me, not at other dogs - she just barks. She is getting more exercise now that she was, as my boyfriend started taking her for walks when he gets home from work. Oddly enough - when he started taking her for more walks, she started barking more! I'm at a loss at what to do - she's fine on leash. Any suggestions? |
That's funny that she doesn't bark at people or other dogs!! She just barks which makes me think that maybe she is nervous or scared and she barks hoping that everyone will stay away from her. Mine love to bark at the big dogs at the dog park through the fence and it is a struggle to get them to stop but atleast I know the reason. This is very interesting, I hope someone has some other ideas for you. |
Thanks for the reply, I must have missed it somehow. I don't believe this behavior is motivated by fear or nervousness. Lexi is fearless! Almost too fearless as she'll go up to anyone/dog she comes across. I think it happens because she just gets so darn excited, since I've posted this question I've started walking her onleash into the park. I try to make sure she is calm before I let her off, it has improved a little. I'll going to keep working with her. |
Sounds like excitement to me! I go to the dog park often and there are a few dogs who do the non-stop barking, not out of aggression, fear or anything else... but simply because they are just so excited. They do exactly like what you're describing. Jackson doesn't do the kind of barking you are saying but when he wants another dog to play or chase him... he does this annoying high pitched playful bark and I try to just go up to him and tell him "Shh" or offer him a treat for being quiet (I always carry some in my pocket). But I figure it's a dog park... that's what they are there for, right?! Good luck with your situation! I do agree w/ you that bringing her into the dog park calmly should help! |
