yorkie too hyper my 2 month old yorkie is too hyper. whenever i play with him, he gets so crazy, jumping up and down, quick paces, running around in circles like a crazy puppy. is there such a thing as a yorkie that's too hyper? when i bought him at the pet store, they have instructed me to feed him the same food until he's at least 6 months. right now, he is eating a mixture of 1/2 can of wet dog food, 3 tbsp of water and 3 tbsp of pancake syrup) to keep his sugar level up. is this causing my dog to be too hyper? |
never heard of giving the dog sugar, but I'm new to the breed? That said yorkies and terriers in general tend to be very high energy dogs. a tired dog is a happy dog. Does she fetch at all? It's good if you can get an outlet for the dog. Mine will play fetch and tug and that tends to get her tuckered out pretty good. I also have the advantage of having an additional puppy so they can go nutso together. :P |
yorkie too hyper ya, i guess yorkies are prone to hypoglycemia so they want to make sure that the puppy's sugar level is up. i guess its better this way than my puppy ending up having hypoglycemia. i wanted to get him a companion/playmate too but it's my first puppy! i can only handle one hyper puppy at a time lol... |

Maybe the sugar is making him more hyper. Mine is hyper enough without it. They are right when they say a tired Yorkie is a happier dog and easier to deal with. Mine wants to go for walks all the time and will play for hours if we will play with him. |
Yep, it is the sugar!! check his/her gums if they are a good bright pink the sugar level is up, if they start to look whitish and dull they are low on sugar. Our Spec (that's her name) was hpoglycemic as a 10 week old she was given suryup maybe a 1/4 oz if she got too much she would go yorkie crazy for an hour or so. She is normally very layed back. we only gave it to her a few times! then she was fine!:) Spec's Dad |
How many times a day did they tell you to feed him all that? He should have stayed with his mom till 12 weeks old, and then they should be on puppy food. At 8 weeks, he needs 3-4 meals per day, and needs to be watched for hypoglycemia. (I would be hyper on 3 tablespoons of pancake syrup! esp 3 times a day!) Have Nutrical on hand for that. I would offer him a moistened puppy kibble till 12 weeks as kibble has more nutrients in it than canned food. Okay to mix some canned in as you switch him over. It may help to offer him a last meal right before bedtime to ward off the hypoglycemia. |

My guess is the pancake syrup may play a role in his hyperactivity. If he eats well I would not worry about him getting hypoglycemic. I would start taking him on daily walks. Start small and gradually increase the time & distance and see if that helps in calming him down. |
Check with your vet (if his a small breed specialist :thumbup:) about the syrup. My vet only recommended me to give my girls a fingertip licking the first few weeks and if I ever see them down. But like the others say if his eating a good healthy meal he doesnt need the syrup unless his hyperglicemic. |

Congratulations on your new baby. Definitely check out the health and diet forums. there is a ton of opinions on food here. There is much healthier options to feed you baby. Hopefully your vet will be able steer you in a good direction. It sounds as though the pet store wanted to make sure the puppy was alert for people to see. If you are considering getting a companion, I would look to a reputable breeder or rescue. :) |
