Marking Question
 
Hi All!

Our new adopted baby is scheduled to go in for his neuter next week. I thought all was fine other than the humping I talked about in my welcome thread lol! Last night my husband caught him marking in our room. So he cleaned it up then decided to see if he had marked anywhere else. He has gone mark happy in our bedroom...7 different places!!! I know that neutering will probably help with this problem but could it have become a habit that we will have to break? If so how do we go about breaking it. He gets plenty of outside time and marks on whatever I will let him mark on.

I find it odd that he only has marked in our room and nowhere else. He is housebroken and usually barks to go out. He is crate trained as well. We do have an x pen that we got from my parents since their Malteses no longer need it. Would it be wise to put him in there so we can keep a better eye on him. I do not like to put him in his crate when we are home because I feel he needs to get his energy out and he loves his playtime.

He is a jumper though and I worry that he will hurt himself trying to jump out.

Suggestions?:confused:

I know some people use belly bands to help with that.

How old is he, neutering often eliminates inside marking if the habit isn't firmly established. Bellybands are a strip of velcroed material, which holds a pad that soaks up urine. Many of our members make and sell them. Here's a picture. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php...ng_id=40061583

He is almost 1. His prior family did not have him neutered so we are taking him. Hopefully it has not become a habit yet:(.

I will have to check out the belly bands thanks!

It takes about a month after surgery for the testosterone levels in the blood to lower. The testicles make the bulk of the testosterone, although the adrenal gland makes some as well, and this amount varies greatly between dogs. The testosterone is thought to be the hormone responsible for marking. If marking isn't a firmly established habit, training is possible, and allowing the dog to take walks and mark outside, and praising this behavior reduces the inside marking. You are correct in assuming it has nothing to do with their need to urinate. He's still young enough, the surgery might do the trick, especially if he's an only dog.

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately he is not an only doggie but he wasn't at his other house either. We let him walk around alot outside marking whatever he wants(within reason of course!) so I am hoping constant supervision for a while and we can retrain his thinking so he will stop marking after his surgery. We have yet to catch him really in the act. My husband just happened to find it shortly after he did it so the spot was still wet. It is very hard to know when the mark without smelling around cause it dries so quickly!

It really hard to stop, it's considered "wire in" behavior, and like you mention it's often hard to catch them in the act. Think of it like a sneeze, even if someone were to punish you severely, sneezes have a way of just happening on their own, without much control on your part. By the way, once your dog is neutered the smell of the marking is greatly reduced! :D

Also, when he is outside try to interrupt his marking. You can turn it into a command almost. He needs to learn that he can only mark when you say it's okay. When he goes to mark outside, clap and make a loud noise like "ah-ah!" When you allow him to mark use a command that he's "allowed" to. If his behavior is already ingrained, then this can help.

I'm not sure this will work, he'll probably just learn that he has to mark when you are not looking. I mean if I caught them marking inside, I would definately say No, and clap my hands, but I think it's futile if you do this outside.

Actually, if you're outside (not in the backyard) he should be on a leash, which means it should be very easy to catch it. If its a backyard, then take out on a leash. I recommended this to a client who had a marking Shih Tzu and it helped her a lot. Dogs have a hard time understanding "no don't do that" It has to be "no don't do that, do this instead" So it gives an alternate. "Don't mark here" "Mark here instead"

Edit: If it helps, I'm an accredited Dog Trainer, so I know everything doesn't work for everyone. But trying is a lot better than nothing at all right?! :)

BTW, what does "accredited" mean? With the ASPCA?

Certified Pet Dog Trainer. It's a title that you receive after logging so many hours as a trainer and you take an AKC certified test. I'm here to help! :)

So you are certified with the AKC? Just curious, I don't know much about how the titles work and all.
