What's the FIRST thing I should do when I bring him home? My boyfriend and I just bought a Yorkie and are bringing him home tomorrow. Both of us have had family dogs in the past, but weren't solely in charge of training them. We both want to be good owners and raise a happy, healthy, obedient dog, so what are a few things we should be sure to do? We named him Norman, and he's just under 6 months old. Also, I've been reading the potty training forums and most of the owners use potty pads. After talking it over with my boyfriend, we decided that since we live in a one-bedroom apartment, that isn't the best way for us to go. If anyone has tips about training your Yorkie to go outside, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks! |
You should probably make sure Norman isn't stressed and if he is give him some Nutrical. Then show him where him food and water is. Just show him where everthing is and cuddle with him till he gets used to everything. Congratulations!!! |
I am sorry, I just now saw that was your first post. So...... Welcome, so glad you are here and I can't wait to get to know you and Norman. Make sure you post some pictures as soon as you can. We really love to see everyone's babies. |
Thanks for responding! We can't wait to take him home! We visited him today at the pet store and he hopped right into my lap and started licking my face. He was so stoked to see us again! You mentioned giving him a lot of "Nutrical." Is that a brand of food? |
No, Nutrical is a dietary supplement that alot of small breed owners need to use for hypoglycemia. If you aren't familiar with this you might want to go to the seach button at the top of the window and type it in. These little guys can easily have a hypoglycemic attack and you may not be aware of it if you don't know what to look for. That is not to say that all Yorkies have them but it is good to be prepared. I am certain there will be many pages pop up if you do a search. I hope I haven't alarmed you, I just want you to be prepared and know what to do if and when it happens. |
Welcome Im Debbie Mickey and Minnies Mommy. Nutri-Cal is a high calorie dietary supplement in a low volume form. It is a great tasting vitamin paste You can go here to read more about it. Theres a lot of good info here. http://www.mylittlemia.com/yorkiecare.html#anchor_42 |
Thanks for this link, YorkieShadow. I've heard a lot about nutrical since I've been on YT but nothing explained it so clearly. Oh, and WELCOME, Lil' Dude Norman. You guys sound like terrific Yorkie owners to be checking things out in advance. Be sure to post pictures. If you thought hypoglycemia (sp?) sounded bad, you don't want to see a fellow Yorkie owner who can't see pictures of a new Yorkie! |
If I was bringing home a new baby I would love love love it. :lovewings :heart to |
Thanks for all your suggestions everyone! When we pick him up today I'll be sure to ask about the vitamins! |
