Thanks for the help Lieknie. I must admit that I have let up alot on the rolling over right now. I have really had no luck at all with this. When I try to gently "help" her roll over she really panics. She definitely isn't comfortable going on to her back. So for now I am just getting her use to laying in my lap on her back and rubbing her tummy. Not sure if this will do any good but I figure if it is a trust issue maybe this will help. So for now we are working on the crawl and that is going pretty slowly too but I am being very patient with her and only working on it for a short period of time a couple times a day. She is very food motivated usually. But I "dance" the cheerios in front of her face and she just lays there and watches them and then will make small little attempts to stretch for them and then just stops and lays there some more. Doesn't really get excited enough to really go for them. But we will keep trying. Would appreciate any other ideas if you have any. Thanks again. Debbie | Hey debelm2, I had a monster of a time teaching Thor how to roll over, but he does it like a champ now! Let's see, what did I do:
- Like you, I practiced getting him comfortable just being on his side and back. I actually rolled him on his back and kept him there for a while, feeding him treats.
- He likes to roll over while he plays, so I started praising him and treating him when he did it on his own.
- Generally, the rule it to teach a multi-step trick backwards. So, if you put her on her back, she should naturally roll right side over, and you can reward her for that. Then as she gets more comfortable, you can start with her on her side, and roll her on her back - she'll know to complete the roll. Then you can start with her lying down, and lure her to roll on her side, and she can take it from there.
It can be a lot harder to teach this trick to dogs that are uncomfortable exposing their belly. Make sure she has a good Down first, that's the foundation. |
