Marking questions 1) I have a male who was neutered at 6 months of age. He has never marked inside the house. If I adopt another male Yorkie, what are the chances that one or both would mark in the house? What is the potential of breaking the habit? 2) At what age do unaltered/un-neutered males typically start marking? I'm considering bringing home a 7-month old boy who will be neutered this week. |
Marking is instinctive and it's likely adding any dog of either sex it will occur This does not necessarily mean inside your house. Mine mark...including my female and do it outside. A male which has been used in breeding is typical of marking ANYWHERE and this includes inside. |
Yup, Uni marks too. But only outside. Well, she did once inside on her very first bully stick. I corrected her, and she hasn't done it indoors since. My former foster boy was neutered at 4 mos, and when I got him he was 13 mos, he would still mark, yet he would squat, he didn't lift his leg! |
I have 2 males, Hobbes is 10 months old and neutered and Calvin is 4 months old and will be neutered when he is old enough. They will use the pee pad in the house but have never marked furniture etc. They also pee outside , Hobbes tries to hike his leg but he is really to lazy and Calvin still squats. My female rules the boys anyway. |

When we moved out of the house, we found all these tiny little dried up circles of pee and little bits of poop all under and behind the furniture. |

You've asked a loaded question. As most of my boys are studs marking is something I deal with on a day to day basis. How I deal with this problem is belly bands. As far as training a nuetered male, should be fairly easy, if they've never been used for stud. However, bringing in a new male into the house may trigger male instincts. Nuetered boys will mark when they enter a new territory....the best thing is to keep belly bands on them for those occassions. At what age do they begin marking, I've got a wee one here that began marking and hiesting his leg at 12 weeks of age......Keeping my eye on this guy so, he won't be nuetered. Now I'm sure all this is clear as mud.......right? Each boy is different and can be trainable.....it all depends on how consistent and devoted you are to the training. Oh! and keep that spray bottle with vinegar and water handy..... |

Reno was neutered early and has never marked even with me bringing in numerous male fosters that did mark. The biggest markers here have always been the surrendered males that were previously used for breeding. But, even the foster males (that had come from breeders, mills) I had neutered by about 6 months, quit marking inside anyway. |

I was so lucky with Maximo; when I brought him home at 13 weeks, he went straight for the piddle pad and has never missed. |

Jackson was neutered at 7 months old. He marks outside still if we're on walks, etc, on trees and stuff but he has never marked indoors, in my home or anyone elses. I dogsit a lot and usually bring him with me and even in new peoples homes w/ other male dogs, he's never lifted his leg and neither have any of the other male dogs around. My dad has a female & male dog where I bring Jackson often and neither boys lift their legs in the house. Sometimes I'll sleep there for a few nights. |
