Help! We need some sleep. My little guy is 5 months old and neutered. He seems to be well socialized both with people and other dogs, but when he gets together with my girlfriend's Westie, 8 years old, he constantly barks at him. You can see they are playing, or vying for alpha status, but the Westie is very passive while my Yorkie just keeps jumping on him and barking, sometimes all night. If we put him in the bed he will lick us for a few minutes and then jump off and go for the Westie again. Funny, however, when they are outside they do the same things but no barking. And when he is home just with me he hardly barks at all. I hate to leave him at home, so how do we get him to quiet down when they are together. We are hoping this is a puppy phase that will end on its own. BTW, otherwise they don't hurt each other and can be together and quiet at times. |
Perhaps an exhausting walk before bed, would help him. Do you have a 'ritual' wind down, with him? I have a 5 month old, and we have a really good romp and play, then a treat, snuggle, and a quick grooming session, and when I set him down he puts himself to bed, in his crate. Good luck... |
Well, I get tired just watching him jump around. Your ideas sound good, but it's really cold and snowy here, so outside excercise this time of year is tough, but I do take him for regular walks. My girlfriend and I can't figure out why all this play and barking doesn't wear him out. It just goes on and on, and if I tied a pedometer on him he'd wear it out. |
This one sounds like an interesting challenge, I can't wait to hear how you guys figure out the solution! Maybe just shush reward training? |
