Puppy Pad issues I have trying to potty train my yorkie since I got her 2 1/3 weeks ago. When I put the puppy pad on the floor she starting using it with no problems, its like she knew what I wanted her to do. shes always goes pee on the pad but no matter how much I try she will not go poop on the pad, even if its new or old. I guess im looking some help on why she will only go pee and how can I teach her to go both. |
Have you tried putting a piece of poop on the pad and leaving it there until she uses it? Keep an eye on her and when she starts to poop quickly put her on the pad. My litter of 5 pups (7 weeks old) use their potty pad. It seems if one poops then they all go and do it. Hope this helps. Betty |
I have tried putting some on the pad but she will walk to the pad and go pee then walk to the other side of the room to poop. I have tried catching her in the act of pooping and bringing her to the pad but she will just hold it and walk to the floor and go there. |
:idontknow...but I've noticed Sophie doesn't ever poop and pee in the same place even outside. Have you tried two pads in different locations? |

I am having the same problem - Bridget (who I've had 1 week now)will use the pad to pee 95% of the time - although will get my attention before she runs down the hall to her room - she still wants me there to praise her. I'm afraid I'm sending her mixed signals. Once I praise her - how do I get her to know she has to continue with the "poo" part - and maybe she doesn't have to. How do I know? If I don't praise her will she still know she is doing good? I try to get her on the pad not too long after eating - she will sniff and then pee - but that's it. Actually any time I get her on the pad she will pee at least a little then look up at me waiting for the "Good Girl". I've tried the different pads and she will just pee on both. I would appreciate any suggestions - I'm afraid I'm confusing her - not to mention myself!!! |

It's good to know I'm not the only one with a picky puppy about where he pees and poos. I have had Papi for 4 days now and he is perfect at using his pads to pee but he will not use the to poo. The only time he has pooed on his pad is when it was clean and he had not used it to pee yet. I was just going to start putting newspaper around the pad since he seems to poo next to the pad just not on the pad. |
The best suggestion I can give it to keep your puppy on a strict feeding schedule. Then you'll be able to almost set your watch by her bowel movements. I used crate training and it worked great. If I know she has to poo, I keep her on the pad. If she doesn't go, I put her back in her crate for ten minutes and then try again. Repeat this process until she goes. It can take a while, but it's worth it once they realize what you're trying to have them do. Over-the-top praising is then in order. :) |
potty training Molly is 18 weeks old, has been with us for about 7 weeks now and just this week it seems like she has given up on using her pee pad. She was doing so well and now she will pee everywhere in the house except the pad. I fuss at her when she does this and she looks at me like she knows that she did wrong. I have all the pads in the same place, change them out each day and even added more around the house. They don't even seem to faze her! She is free to roam with me in the house all day and sleeps in bed with us at night. She has never had an accident at night and also seems to be stubborn early in the am when I put her with me in the bathroom. She is being a typical female according to my husband;). Any suggestions??? |
Hi there! I too am having issues with pad training. My Farrah will either pee or poop on the pad, but never both. That is one issue. Some days, nothing on the pad and all on the floor. Her set up is an x-pen with a bed, a pad and her bowls during the day. Then I take the bowls away for the night. She is an excellent sleeper but I wake up to a mess in her x-pen. She is on a strict feeding schedule since I got her 2 1/2 weeks ago and is definitely not a scheduled "pooper". She is 14 1/2 weeks now. I do not work so am home and very scheduled with her. I wonder if I should crate her at night and put her in the pen with the pad in it when she wakes up??? Well, good luck to you! |
I've heard that a lot of pups don't like to be watched while they poop. Is the pad somewhere that is out on the open for everyone to see? Maybe that's the problem. If possible, try attaching her leash to yourself and just keep an eye on her every minute you're at home. When she starts to sniff and turn in a circle, you know she's ready to poop. Pick her up (don't walk her, because that gives her the opportunity to go before you get her outside) and take her outside, or to the hidden pad (maybe in a bathroom?) and tell her to go potty. Choose a phrase like "go potty" or "make", whatever you want, and stick with it, this way she'll associate the word with going potty. Good luck! |
