5 AM Wakeup Barking! Hey guys, So normally Chuchi goes to sleep, I leave him in his crate in his room, close the door, he wines for about 5 - 10 minutes sometimes but then calms down and he stays there until 7 or 8. If he really needs to go to the bathroom before then he barks, I wait a bit, take him out and he does his thing. Today, he woke up around 445 AM barking. I figured, poor guy, took him across the street to the park for 10 minutes, he didnt do anything so I took him back to his crate, told him very good and tried to go back to sleep. He started to whine and bark again, which the neighbours don't seem to appreciate (nor do I, I wanted to go back to sleep). I went back in his room, let him out, picked him up and held his mouth shut (which I was told teached dominance and he has been quiet for about 15 minutes now). My question is, why was he whining/barking? And what can I do to teach him against this beyond what I am doing? :eek: Thanks! Aron |

there is nothing wrong with a crate. Mine sleep with me and have crates. Probably just time to get up and play! Mine are up everyday at 6 and some days they are up at 5. |
Maybe you could get an expen and put him in there with some toys when he wakes up early , he is only a puppy, he probally wants to play.. can you bring him in your room with some toys to play with? When mine was a puppy she used to get up between 5-6 am , she pottied and played.. I dont know if you have skin kids but when mine woke up at 5 am and cried to eat , I fed them let them play and an hour or so later they would take a nap.. He is probally just up and awake for they day... if you dont feel like waking up, maybe have an expen with his toys available or gate him in the kitchen , he will probally keep himself occupied , unless he misses you in which case Id put him in your room with a few toys. |
Thanks for the tips guys. I tried a completely different approach :) Chuchi has been super well behaved and obedient so i gave him a CHANCE! :D Closed my door and gave him the rest of the apartment (150m2 to himself) and when I left I showed him where his crate was, said his trigger word and left him there. I thought it was a good idea until at 2 AM he was walking around the entire house lol, all I could hear were his footsteps. He didn't destroy anything but he has to learn when his bed time is. I took him back to his room, left the crate open and left a doggy diaper pad on the floor. That seemed to work much better |
Maybe he heard noises outside and bark to warn you guys.. I know we have a train that is very far away but if Bailey hears it she use to bark..because they are dogs and thats what they do. Maybe leave the radio on to cover all the outside sounds. There is nothing wrong with cratting at night not everyone wants a furry friend in their bed and people want the puppy to have limits and respect their stuff. Also maybe he is not so tired and needs more play time before bed to exhaust him? You will definatly find your answer on this site. Good Luck with everything :) |
Just a thought: Since your Yorkie doesn't have a watch, have you tried keeping the curtains closed to block the moring light? |
My pup Rufus does the same thing. He is nearly 12 weeks old and cries around 5 or 6 every morning. Sometimes were lucky and he sleeps till 7. I get up with him take him out for a wee and then bring him to bed with me and he sleeps till about 10 with me. So I can't figure why he cries every morning. I think maybe he is lonely? |
I'm getting my little one in 7 weeks. I'm planning to crate him at night. Hubby doesn't want a dog in the bed with us. Is there anyone who is crating at night with good success? |
Crate training is meant to be the best way to toilet train your puppy. I haven't tried it but I really wish that I did. I read somewhere that if you are using a crate to train your pup with sleep your meant to leave it in the room with you and then as he adjusts to it slowly move it away a little bit every night. I really wish I had of tried it with Rufus. |
I have been leaving him in his room with the crate open and a pee pad which seems to have him content. It gives him his space to walk around but at the same time not too much space |
