Morkie training separation anxiety help Hi I need some help with my morkie. He is 2 and I live in an apartment now and I am having a few problems. He HATES his crate. I have tried feeding him in it. I give him praise/treats when he is in it. He is ok when it's not shut but when it's shut he won't stop crying and barking. He cries if I am in the room and goes nuts if I leave the room. If he isn't crated he marks and gets in the garbage. I have never caught him marking he always does it when im not home or not looking. Does anyone have any tips on how to get him to like his crate? I have a toy and dog bed in there. I give him bones but he ends up not even chewing on them just having tantrums. |
Welcome to YT. Unfortunately, the best thing is time. You need to get him use to the crate gradually. Never force him in it. You might start by doing what you've been doing. Leaving the door open with toys and a bed. You might want to also drape a blanket over the outside so only the front shows. This will make it feel more like a den. When he is going in there on his own often, then feed him in there with the door open. Do this several times so he feels like it's his domain and his only. Eventually, while he's eating, close the door, but open it when he's done. After a while, start keeping him in there a few minutes longer. Eventually, leave the room for a few minutes. Make the time longer and longer gradually. You don't want to use the crate as a punishment if you're trying to get him use to it. Also, I think with male dogs if you have them neutered it cuts down on the marking, but this is between you and him. I wish you luck and hang in there. We are here for you both. |
Buy and expen , makes it easier... put his crate in there with the door open with a bed in it.. toys , food ect.. maybe he will get used to it that way!! I was a big failure at CRATES 101 , I felt to bad , I like the expen.. even today if I put it up she doesnt mind it at all!! They are great to have for going to friends cookouts, the beach etc.. |
Thanks for the advice I am trying to make the crate more like a den. I put his food all the way in the back so he goes into eat now. Also, is there anyway to get him to stop barking at me when I leave? He also can't be in a room by himself when I'm home or he will bark and cry. |
