Grates - healthy fear or problem phobia? Frisco is spooked by air vents and sewer grates. I have teased him a bit and challenged him to get familiar with them, but today we went for a bike ride and he totally hit the brakes when I was going to ride by a noisy sewer. So we sat by it talking about sewers for a bit, and then went around more wider, ok, but I'm not sure how you end up with a balanced reasonable healthy respect for sewers out of an initial phobia, and I'm not sure if he should jump up on the grassy byway to go around or stay with me on the pavement side, going wider around. What I'm trying to say is I don't want to eliminate the fear totally, just enable Frisco to handle it a bit more casually and reasonably. Because the sewer grates here are enough for him to break a leg in or fall right through. So he should go around, even if he sees me go ON it. Will that work? Does he know my feet/wheels are a different size than his? |
Similar problem here. I don't know why, but Sydney is afraid of heat vents. She will go up to them sometimes, but very slowly as if it were going to attack her. I've tried giving her treats when she goes near it and even play with her by it, but she's still afraid. I'm curious what everyone suggests. |
I've decided this must just be a healthy caution. If these were bred as mousers, maybe they should be afraid of snake pits or something, maybe it reminds them somehow. Also, Frisco will dance across a log over a creek, but hesitates on a bridge with a hole in it. |
I guess I have a grate phobia too!! I have to walk around them myself :p My husband makes fun of me! I'm right there with ya Frisco!! |
Thor won't walk over grates. Once when I was rushing I accidentally dragged Thor over a grate, and yep, he fell partway in. Thor doesn't mind if I want over grates, as long as it's clear that he doesn't have to. I just automatically go around them now without even thinking about it. I've noticed with some other small dogs I walk that they don't like grates either. So yes, I think, they correctly assess that they could get their little feet stuck. I've not sure about the sewer grates, but I wonder if it was just the noise + steam? Sounds like it could be scary for a doggie. |
Thanks, it makes sense. The sewer grates I'm talking about are huge wide spaced grids that I don't think a yorkie could negotiate. And I guess they really are smart, because him putting his butt down on that bike ride, well, he didn't like the speed I was going and he knew we were headed for that grate, but he didn't know i would go around it. Now I've showed him, and he goes grass side, I go road side. So why won't he demonstrate this caution with cars and big dogs. vwill, that's funny, I'll tell him, thanks :) |
