Maya is eating her poop... She is 3 months and Today I cought her eating her poop! This is the first time I see that... why is she doing that? I feed her Royal Canin for Yorkies twice a day and sometimes a treat. Do you think she is hungry?:eek: |
I doubt this has much to do with hunger. This can be a hard habit to break once it gets started......try to remove the mess as soon as possible, just so it's not accessible, or perhaps you could try feeding your puppy some fresh pineapple. This supposedly makes the poop taste horrible! Good luck! |
is a learned behavior from seeing their mama eating the puppies poop to keep the whelping are clean, if you buy some accent food seasoning and sprinkle a bit on her food every day until she stops eating her poop will do the trick, I had to do that with our yorkie jack Relay. hugs, Carmen in nj |
I feel ya Chloe has this problem as well, Except that its the cats poo shes after! I have her seperated off by a gate right now, Until I get an automatic litter system that takes care of it right away. But if i was to take the gate down right now, She'd dart for the box! |
I too have a poop eater! I find that after she poops I quickly clean it up and tell her good girl. If she starts to eat it I say eh eh leave it. She usually listens. The pineapple does work though!:D |
Here is dog whisperer saying they either eat poop from boredom or for a specific nutritional craving. Anyway he redirects the pooch to a different source of the nutrient that is fresh. I guess you could go through the fridge waving piece by piece, seeing what the dog seems to want at the moment? |
Thanks so much for this video!! It didnt become a habit yet, but I am going to watch her for sure. It was a one time thing yesterday and I hope it will stay like that. I personally dont belive in giving dogs human food, so I will find a delicious treat instead. Thankd again!!!:D |
I noticed when Maggie came she would feast on her poop...she would be so eager to eat it after she pooped it out lol It wasn't like she just nibbled on it like some dogs do..she would be crazy for it. WELL....I had to put a stop to it immediately. I bought those tablets that are supposed to help make them stop..you give them once a day. And I also took the poop away immediately...telling her no and pointing to the poop. Then like Cesar I would offer her a treat instead and say 'good girl' and I noticed she hasn't been doing it as much. I also leave her food out at all times incase she gets hungry..she can eat her food and not her poop-in case she poops and im not watching. |
My dog Killer also did this for a while when I first got him. He would gobble it up so fast .I would have to scoop it up quickly. He did this for quite some time then he seemed to slowly outgrow this behavior after he was several months old maybe 4-5 months . |

So, since I posted the thread it didnt happen It happened only once that day, and I havent seen her doing that since then. I all the time find her poop in the morning. Maybe she was just craving for some crap:icon5: As for the food. People are saying soooo many things about different types of foods that it just so confusing. I find that Maya and Guliver dont jump on the Royal Canin, which means that's it is probably healthy and no so tasty, junk food type...sometimes I do change to Wellness for small breed. I like the packaging as well. (And its not that cheap)... Well...thanks again for the wonderful suggestions and insights!:thumbup: |
There are healthier AND tastier foods than RC. Have you checked out the kibble grading chart yet in the health and diet section? Wellness is cheaper (in price) than RC at least in CA it is. RC for a small bag is $22, and Wellness is $14. Plus I sign up for Wellness email and get coupons monthly. Also Rc has corn and wheat in it. No dog food should have those, but most of them do. |
try putting heinz 57 sauce on her food. tastes great going down but not so great in the poop. we use it on the Military working dogs sometimes. or the local vets have tabs for that. |
I would NOT put 57 sauce on my dogs food. Pretty sure it's got onion powder and garlic powder in it, among other things you should not feed your dog. |
Yes, I wouldnt go that far... And again, it happened only ONCE. So now I learned also that sometimes it is good to wait and see if a bad behavior is getting worse... I belive that dogs are like humans;sometimes they do A stupid thing, and thats all. Not all the time there is a meaning behind it.:yelrotflm |
