Train dog not to chase cars? Help! Hello I may need to be on the training forum but just wanted to stop a problem before it happens. How do you train a dog not to chase cars? Because they are so small he would definantly get hit and die!!! Just wanted to know....:aimeeyork:animal-pa:thumbup::) |
Mine aren't allowed out of the fenced yard area without a harness and leash. |

If you are thinking about the "escape artist", make sure your "come" command is set in stone!! |

Why in the world world he be off leash to begin with?:( Your just asking for trouble allowing a small dog to run around without any leash on. He could get hit by a car, attacked by another dog, carried off by a bird of prey the list goes on and on. If you love your baby protect him. No need to teach him how NOT to chase a car. That should be the last thing he's taught! |
KEEP THE DOG ON A LEASH..do you know what a 2 ton car could do to a 5 pound dog?? Im not trying to be nasty, but why on earth would you allow your dog to run around unleashed or not in a fenced area??? Just to many things can happen. :(.. for the safety of your dog, put it on a leash.. |
She's been here before... |
Well, I think it can be a legitimate question. Because even though your dog should always be on leash, accidents happen and dogs get loose and it'd be nice for them to know NOT to chase a car. So I think it's a good thing to train them to be scared of cars. For example, when walking Jackson on leash and we're going to cross the street, I usually stop him and say "car, stay" as the car passes by. I don't know what he would do without a leash and a car but at least it puts my mind at ease that he may remember if ever to get loose. |

I really believe this question comes from a legitimate member and is trying to find out answers. To get back to the OP and the question.... My opinion is to keep Nigel on a leash if not in a fenced in area, so nothing like that would ever happen. Too many awful things can happen off leash. |
I am really not a person that wants to be involved in controversy on YT, but in my opinion, this picture is not necessary. Maybe this person is a real member with real questions. Please check out her profile and chat with her for awhile. I could be wrong, but just imagine if someone posted that picture about you. I know there has been a lot of problems lately with trolls, and if I am wrong, I personally apologize for coming back to your post/picture in such a harsh manner. |
Let Me Explain! Okay, first off, I know the question was a little off the wall, but it was a legitimate question and no I am not a TROLL! Second I don't let Nigel run free to get hit by a car. He did come out in the garage with us with the door open while my daughter was washing her car and I saw a car coming and it crossed my mind what if he ran after it. He is never unattended. And thank you Lisa for standing up for me on this. This site is for questions and support of other people but I may not ask from this forum anymore with that kind of a response. Third I have watched a morning program called "Me or the dog" with a lady named Victoria and there is a way to train them! |
There are probably some well trained yorkies that can handle no leash - but speaking on a personal level - no way would mine be outside without a harness. If your yorkie can handle walking short distances off leash - great - but they're so impulsive I'd worry if he saw something and darted after it - he'd run into traffic .....the street is the biggest danger to all dogs ps - my uncle had a big dog (forget the breed) and for years was allowed to be outside and did like to chase cars ..they couldn't stop him.....(they live in Rural Maine) - well - months ago - a car stopped HIM. :( |

We took Wylie to obedience training when he was younger. Our Humane Ass'n offered a wonderful class at a great price - me and hubby learned sooo much, and so did Wylie. Still, Wylie is a "runner", I gotta say. We are very, very cautious w/ him. In our neighborhood - our HOA has a big park for us for fetch or whatever - and Wylie *loves* that park. So, if we allow him out of our door and don't keep our "commands" right on top of him at all times - he will take off for that park, which is in his site. Whereas Marcel would not run -- he sticks right w/ Mom and Dad. |
there was an episode on Animal planet, about a yorkie who lived in the city, he was taught not to chase cars even while he was on a leash so I do think it is a good question. He was told to sit at the curb... he was not allowed to stand or put a foot forward until the owner walked. I have no idea where the OP lives but I do think its a good question.. I would walk on the curb and do NOT let him but his foot past the curb, make him sit and treat. I going to assume you live in a busy area, so even while on a leash dogs still want to chase the car.. |
Thanks... Thanks Jeannie and everyone else with the positive input...I already have Nigels commands down..he knows how to sit, lay down, come, rollover, jump up. Still working on stay though. I truely agree they are too unpredictable to be off a leash running free. He usually wants to stay by our side though. Not worth the risk. This question was not asked so much for Nigel but just for any dog. That show I watched I remembered her training some dog for that but couldnt remember the details. I was just curious. It was called "It's Me or the Dog" with the trainer Victoria ? I can't remember her last name. She is really fun to watch and learn things from. Thanks again!:) |
Pixie is always on a harness and leash. But, when we take her for a walk she goes nuts when a car goes by. We have to pick her up to stop her from barking. Don't know how to break her of it. One thing we have done is to take her were she can't see any cars :car: and she is fine. But, if you are on the sidewalk and one goes by...Look OUT. :aimeeyork |
When I walk Bonnie (we live out in the sticks, so we walk in the road, no sidewalks) and a car is coming, I say "Bonnie a car is coming" and we move to the side of the road and watch the car go by. If she even acts like she wants to run after the car I repremand her with a sharp "NO" and a gentle tweek on her leash (attached to her harness). I would never let her loose, but I hope that if she ever does escape, she will know to get out of the road....May be wishful thinking. |
I actually think this is a very good question. When Winston and I go for a walk, he is told to sit and wait at each and every corner, car or no car, when I say OK and start walking across the street, he follows. I would never intentionally allow Winston to run free without a leash, but you never know, maybe a door or gate was left open accidentally...he has to know to sit and wait for me to get him and not run into the street...no chasing allowed with me, the more you chase them, the more they run. Any other useful suggestions? |
Hopefully your Yorkie won't get out without a leash. I never let mine out without one and somehow I guess my door wasn't closed good or we didn't see him slip out but he got hit by a car and killed 2 days age and I can't stop crying. My answer is they can't be trusted to know cars are dangerous . |

I hate to say this but I don't think even a well trained yorkie can be trusted. They are so headstrong, and they want what they want -NOW! |
I have no idea how to train a yorkie like that, but I have learned an emergency action that has actually saved Gizmo's life! Thank you YT! (This is where I learned it and it is worth repeating.) If your dog accidentally gets free and starts running toward the street, run AWAY from your dog!! I found out that it really does work! Gizmo thought it was a game and started chasing me while I ran away from the street. I ran past my son while Gizmo was chasing me, and my son scooped him up. My heart just about stopped! |
