Hugo is way too friendly Hello YT! So Hugo will be a year in a couple of days! YIPPIE!!!! However I have one major conern with him. Here is the situation: HUgo is WAY TOO FRIENDLY!!! When I take him for a walk-which means all the time-and a fellow human comes around- Hugo decides to excitedly greet humans. I find it adorable-especially when he wags his tail and wants to lick all of them. However, given that Yorkies have a propensity for being stolen. I want to learn ways to deter him from this. I in no way want a rude or nasty dog that barks or snaps at strangers-tehre are plenty of those walking around here in NYC. I have looked at some dog training books and even shows on animal planet. However, I have not been able to find literature on this behavior. Therefore YTErs please provide me with any information, websites, or advice you may have. I love my furbaby but I dont want him to be stolen because of his propensity to be nice to others.:confused: Thanks so much YT in advance! |
I have the same issue sometimes with Chuchi in the park. When he is off the leash he will sometimes approach people and get distracted and the people don't mind but I want to keep him safe and not have him that friendly with strangers. I wish he was that way with dogs and his confidence around them which still seems to be quite reserved. Any advice would help me as well! ;) |
I have the opposite problem --- Jackson LOVES every dog he meets. He is a social butterfly and just loves meeting new dogs. He is sooo shy with people though! If a stranger reaches down to pet him, he shys away and is a little nervous. I wish he was more friendly with people sometimes but I guess it's not a terrible thing. We're working on allowing strangers to pet him and it's been going okay. I hope someone can help you. |

Okay mostly with small dogs it will be your alertness , care etc, that will do the most to deter him being stolen. After all a determined human is large enough and can be prepared enough to take a 7 lb yorkie with or without his permission. I'm sure given your concern you would never leave him hooked up outside when you go into a store for example. I'm not sure that his friendliness would attract theives. But what you could try is distracting his attention from the new person - with treats or toys whatever works best. You want him to look to you and at you as the most interesting, exciting, person possible. Beyond this I'm not sure what to suggest |
I have the same problem with Roxy... still. She is that way with all humans & dogs. Wag, wag, wag, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle along with jumping up on both on/off lead. I don't mind it for myself, but I don't like other peoples dogs jumping on me any more than others like her doing it to them. Have found nothing in books/articles to help this particular situation. The only thing that helped one time was when meeting a person who I talked to for awhile, was keeping her on short leash so she couldn't quite reach the woman. Eventually she calmed down & sat like a good girl. I haven't had an opportunity to keep working that angle long enough to make that idea stick in her mind, so I don't know if it is going to work long term or not. She is just so happy happy all the time & of course all the people/dogs in the world are alllll about her! I love that about her, but let's face it, it's not good manners. I know her focus should be on me, but we just aren't there yet. |
Rosie is exactly the same, wanting to meet and greet every person and dog out there, after the number of dog thefts in this area its really got me worried too. At the moment they're just getting road work due to the wet weather, but they need to run around to burn off some energy. I intend to start working on her recall this year. |

Your yorkie sounds suburban. My daughter lives in Manhattan. When I visit, I am amazed at the skilled, well behaved dogs that are on the street. They manage to dodge people without getting their tiny feet stepped on. They are aloof to strangers and never take their eyes off their owners. I have a very friendly guy too. He hasn't visited the big apple yet, but when he does it will be in his purse. |
