A barkless Yorkie! Hello YT! Despite all the books that I have read or programs/videos (thanks youtube-YT) I have noticed that my Yorkie rarely barks. Alll the literature on them proport that Yorkies are very yappy. The only time my Hugo barks is when I come home, but very briefly. He sometimes barks when he plays and romps with his brothers and sister (non-yorkies). I was wondering if other YT members have experieinced this with their furbabies or was it just me...I mean honestly I love that he does not bark, but was wondering if Hugo was one of the few...Please feel free to comment. Oh by the way( cuz I know someone is going to ask), I asked the vet and Hugo has a clean bill of health.:D:aimeeyork |
How old is he? Buddy didn't bark until he was around 5mos old. I thought I had it made until one night he heard something in the hall and barked! I jumped out of the chair in amazement because the bark was so deep and loud you would have sworn it came from a german shepard! |
When I first got Missy, she hardley ever barked. Lasted until she was almost 6 months. I think she found her confidence because she's very vocal now. :D She's not yappy, by any means, but if she wants something, she most definetly lets it be known! :D |
I am sorry but in the original post I did not write that Hugo is going to be a year! |

Wow your one lucky Yorkie Mommie. What a good boy Hugo is. Yorkies love to bark:p and most of us have to train them not too:( |
Oliver is 10 months old, I only heard him bark about 4 times....and that was at Petco barking at other dogs when they first barked at him. |
All of you with quite dogs are very lucky! Dunkin does just fine at home and hardly barks, but when we go out anywhere it's unbearable. I take him places in hopes of desensitizing him, but no luck so far. I even thought we were going to be kicked out of training class last weekend for excessive barking!! I'd say enjoy your quiet little yorkies! I hope that when Dunkin gets a little older I can slip him in a bag to come with me when i have to run errands. For now, it's impossible. |
I would love a quiet dog. Duke used to be quiet now he barks at everything. Of course our big dog is a barker and I think she's teaching him bad habits. When he goes out to go potty he barks for no reason. Sometimes I think he just likes hearing himself.:p:D |
Congrats! Barkless Yorkies are hard to come by, lol. Although, Jackson's not what I would call a yapper by any means. He doesn't bark at other dogs or people when out in public or on walks or anything, he's very laidback and walks right beside me no matter what. The only time he barks are when someone comes in the door, he's an alerter but will stop after like 10 seconds of alert barking lol. So I guess I should consider myself lucky! |
I read somewhere that dogs don't really learn to bark until they are around 6 mths of age. That was certainly true in our case. None of them really barked before that age. So if your's is quite, then enjoy and touch wood. Between my 4, it's mahem most of the time!!:D |
Neither one of mine really bark either, Maddie growls though:rolleyes: Copper makes some other funny noise too when he gets excited, but I can count on one hand how many times I have heard them actually bark. I went to a yorkie meetup recently and all the dogs there were also quiet. |
Laci is not what I consider " yappy" at all, she will bark if she hears a very strange noise or she wants her food.... but honestly for the most part she doesnt bark and she is 1 years old... |
Buster did not bark until we got Maggie when he was about 11 months old. I think she taught him to bark. She barks a lot. I think it's cute, I'm sure my neighbors don't think so, but I love to see her throw her little head back, standing on her back legs giving it all she's got. At what? Most of the time I don't know. Buster rarely barks, only when someone comes to the door, but he will get quiet after a few seconds. |
My Prissy didn't bark very much for the first year and a half of her life. One day the discovered that she could climb on the back of one of the plush chairs in the living rooms and look out the front window. OMG she got so annoying after that. If I am in the general area when she starts barking from the back of the chair then I yell at her to get down and she does. HOWEVER, she particularly LOVES to do this when I am in the BATHTUB! She not care how long or loud I yell for her to stop from the bathroom, SHE WILL NOT STOP!!!! |
Sandy is turning 5 months old in 2 days. He's been with us for 2 months now and I've only heard him barking once! He's a very quiet little guy... I hope he stays that way. |
Ok so I am new to all this myself, But I think it might have something to do with socialization. The reason I say that is my Chloe has barked once, She was told no, and hasnt again. Shes my only dog & shes 5months old. Now my mom bought her brother same age, same genes, but she has another dog, and her yorkie (bear) is a horrible yapper!! He never stops it seems..lol When we go visit he yaps at Chloe and she just looks at me..And I say what every parent has always said.."I dont care what the other kids are doing..!":) |
When I got my yorkie, the breeder told me that they have to learn and hear it from other dogs to bark. |
My Fiona had only barked a few times since we've had her. She will be 10months old soon. I recently changed her food and she barked a lot the first few days she was eating it. She had so much energy. I have 2 other dogs and they bark a lot. My Ella (schnauzer) barks all the time!! She has a high pitched bark and it gets really hard to deal with. It may be that Fiona doesn't know that is what Ella is doing because it sounds so weird! She has a timid personality any way. I think that has a lot to do with her not barking. I am happy she doesn't bark much. Not sure I could handle 2 vocal ladies in the house!:) |
Jasmine is not a barker, however we got her when she only 8 weeks old so I think Prissy who is a toy poodle (7 1/2 years old who does not bark) taught her this. |
I am actually HUgo's daddy! LOL! Thanks for the compliment! |
For those with the non barking Yorkies you should consider yourself very lucky. It is a bad habit and Zeus is practically dripping wet from me spraying him with a water bottle ever time he barks. He likes to bark at the animals on the TV commercials! He watches way too much TV!! |
Well "Dustie" hardly barks either..At first I wondered if he ever would...Now he barks if there is a real reason to..i.e. a knock at the door or if really startled..but never for attention..never at night or when playing...He is now 10 months old...I must admit I do like quiet Yorkies...My others used to be so noisy...and barked at anythig and everything..so Dustie gets my vote lol.. :) |
Of my three Katie (the most nervous) barks the most. Odies is the loudest cos he's the biggest but none really bark a lot. Hugs Shirl x x |
It ias interesting becuase Hugo lives with three other dogs! One of them is a shnauzer mix who is an extreme high pitched male barker adn the chiweenie obly barks occasioally! I guess I am lucky! I honestly prefer non barking dogs my self! |
My ZZ is NOT a barker at all. She barks when she hears me come home and she maybe barks twice then. She might get upset if it's raining really hard or the winds blowing, like last night here. But otherwise she has nothing to say! |
i love that my oldest doesnt bark. Only time she does is when someone knocks on the door (when we are home). Say if i'm coming home and i knock on the door, she wont bark, strange... I think it's because shes warning us, like we cant hear the knocking haha! Our youngest is a very yappy girl. shes only 10 wks so we are training her SHHH! I dont like barking, expecially since we live in an apt complex... UGH! But our oldest is an angel :P |
My little guy is going to be 5 months and doesn't bark much at all. He barks if he hears something outside, which is good, and he barks like crazy at my girlfriend's dog, while they play, which is nervewracking but we hope is just a puppy thing. I've heard that Yappy Yorkies are made by owners who pick them up all time for any reason. I'm sure that's not the only reason, and appologies to owners with yappy dogs who don't pick them up all the time, but that's what I heard. If it's learned from other dogs my girlfriend's dog barks like crazy at other dogs on TV, and this is about the only time he barks. If Ruger pick this up she'll never hear the end of it. :D |
