Group Dog Walkers Hello all, I think this is just a Latin America thing, but it is pretty common here to see "Dog Walkers" walking 6 or 7 dogs at a time in order to help with the socializing process. It is incredible to see, imagine dogs of all sizes, walking together on leashes. It seems like a great way to get Chuchi to socialize, as they tend to have these sessions 3 times a week from 8 AM to 12 PM What do you think of this type of method for getting a dog to socialize at a young age? My worries are just that spending all this time with a person giving different commands might end up confusing him. Funny enough, all the dogs in the group I saw today understood their commands in English and I taught mine to speak Spanish :eek: |
I walk mine with a group of neighbors walking theirs. This does help with socialization, mine and my dogs! |
This is different though; it is one walker taking 7 or 8 dogs at a time. Seems like a good way to socialize but I'm not sure. Never saw it when I lived in North America, but it's pretty common in South America |
I think the effect is very similar on the dogs, though. We get about 8 dogs to 3-4 people and they seem to forget who has their leash! Kind of like a mob effect.:D Still a lot of fun. I have seen it done in New York and California, the 1 walker 10 dog senario. |
LOL! I think it is great that he can spend time with so many different breeds and ages while still in his socializing stage. The only things that worry me are: 1) He will pick up bad habits of the walker/other dogs :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 2) He may get used to other commands while walking and get confused when with me :confused: That's why I'm taking time to see how this guy is, what he does and trying to learn about the positive or negative impacts it may have on him first :animal-pa |
Well starting tomorrow we will be putting this to the test and over time I will let you know how it goes. Chuchi is officially signed up with the dog walker ;) The walker seems very nice and friendly to the dogs and the dogs seem calm and non-agressive. I think this will help Chuchi a lot with his socialization as he is quickly approaching 6 months. Updates to come!!! :D :aimeeyork |
Advice Yeah taking your doggie for a group walking is really a great idea for socializing but your doggie may feel uncomfortable.What I think that you must take your pet for group walking,after few day they will be used to it. |
He has already gone for 2 days and seems to really like it, plays with a little pincher that is in the group and isn't intimidated by the larger dogs. The only thing is he gets back exhausted, can't wait for his water and then takes a nap but I think it is mainly him getting used to it. He gets really excited the next time when he sees the dog walker and his new crew :p |
What great exercise. I guess my only concern is that he would get stepped on by the walker or larger dogs. I do know that my Sydney likes to go for walks with my mother-in-law's Shi Tzu, but there are always at least two people. |
That is awesome. :) I think the most group of dogs Jackson walked with was at our walkathon.. we had my aunt's two dogs (Pit & Siberian Husky) and two other yorkies along with a few others all walking pretty close together, but they were all w/ different people but I imagine it's the same principle. I've walked 3 together by myself on a few occasions and they just have a blast. |
So are you guys going to tell the secret of preventing leash tangles? Do the dogs all stay in line, or what? |

The group walking is going great for Chuchi, I strongly reccommend it! The only concern is to make sure that the walker is a good person and see how he treats the dogs but I got lucky with mine and Chuchi is loving it!! He gets excited to see his dog friends and it has helped him much with his socializing! The first few days he came back exhausted but now he just looks forward to his water when he gets back :D |
