HELP!! My yorkie is destroying my house
 

I really need help with this serious matter. My 8 month old yorkie is destroying my house. She has chewed up my blinds, bitten up the corners of my wall, chewed off the socket to my lamp which was unplugged and continues to pee on the carpet! My husband is getting really frustrated with her behavior. I wanted to know any suggestions you all may have with this matter to make her stop doing these things. I love her with all my heart, but this is not a good behavior for her to have. All the help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Have you tried the bitter apple spray? That may help with the chewing. You could also try pairing the chewing on inappropriate things with shaking pennies in a can so it's a negative consequence. As for the peeing, do you crate her? Does she go outside at all? If she's making progress, I'd say just keep with it, and make sure you take her out every 2 hours and every 1 or 1 1/2 if you're playing and give her a treat. We're getting closer to being potty trained with our 9 month old puppy, but def still working.

She is still young, so she will need more time to housebreak .
I am a new yorkie mom also , and I learned, that if you take them out to walk at least twice a week they will be more calm in the house.

My two puppies just chewed a hole in my Anne Klein shoes. :( I don't care so much, though about the shoes though I know it's a bad behavior I also know that they will stop soon. Their mother chewed everything in sight when she was a puppy and she's almost 3 now and doesn't destroy anything and hasn't for some time.

If you can't watch your puppy you should put her in an X-pen with some toys to chew on. That'll keep her safe and away from stuff to chew that you don't want her ruining. :) Good luck.

She is probably still teething, that's why all the chewing. Uni used to do the same thing. if you can't watch her at the moment put her in an x pen with some chew toys. You can't let a puppy have free reign of the house and expect everything to go smoothly. Uni used to tears sheets of drywall off the walls, and chew the paint off the bullnose corners exposing all the metal underneath. She would chew on baseboards, cords, anything she could get to. I think it's boredom and teething.

Do you have bully sticks for her to chew? Mine stopped eating everything when I started buying them.

A xpen is a great thing to have also.

Plenty of chewing toys, long walks,games, bully sticks, and say "no" if you see her chewing things she's not meant to and give her something she can chew on, is she at home alone when things get destroyed, limit her space so she can't chew every thing, reward her when toilet in right place, growly voice when cleaning up wrong place, they can tell a lot by tones of the voice. My boy has a pee pad inside but sometimes he misses a bit and it goes on the carpet so I just ignore him and have a little moan to myself out loud so now he prefers to go out side all the time, hope hubby will be patient for a little while longer the situation will improve with a bit of extra help from you. Consistant training, reward the positive.:thumbup:

Sounds like you may need some bully bones. Our little male starts going on a war path for kids toys, then I give him a bully bone and he chews himself to sleep LOL works everytime.. Goodluck and hang in there it won't last forever:p

How lucky I am. Joey doesn't chew up anything (other than my reading glasses or ink pens if I leave them on the end table) The vet gave me a large chew when I took him for his inital 12 week check up. It was so big he couldn't even lift it, but the vet said it will help him to learn to use his paws and save your house. Our den lookes like we have babies again. He gets out not one but all 20+ toys. I don't care as long as I have furn. and wood on my tables!!!!! LOL I agree with the others, crate traning is the best. Joey does just fine, but the new girl Cabella has a problem with getting on the pad. She is improving but its a slow process. She had puppies 5 weeks ago and the progress has slowed down again, but we will resume crate trainning again when puppies get a little older. I know its a trying time but they count on YOU to be the enforcer, and you have to be the one to put them on the schedule. Every time Joey would have an "accident" I would ask myself, how long had it been since I took him out or to the pad. Did I feed him off schedule. Yes, he will go poo 9-12 minutes after he leaves his food dish. I feed him at 8am and he better be outside by 8:10 or there might be a package for me. He will go to the pad now but it took months. Rosie is almost 11 months and we still have to watch she doesn't get at any wires, she just seams attracted to them. She also chews on any wood she finds if shes bored or feels she's not getting enough attention when I'm on my laptop. She'd just started asking to be let outside but since she was speyd on Monday that has taken a step backwards, but once she's fully recovered hopefully it will get back on track.

Puppies get into things, therefore when not watched need to be confined,
to save your house and to keep them safe. Try an ex-pen or gate in the kitchen
until he's housebroken. Only take him out when you are giving him your
undivided attention. Continue to give him chew items for that craving to chew.
Bitter apple spray can be used on your woodwork in the kitchen.
Just like a baby they should not be left alone until they can be trusted.

Laci never ever chewed anything either! I used to wonder if I was just blessed. I always had plenty of Bullys, teething toys, teething bones.. all around the house.. so I guess she never had the desire too.. I would think if she is doing that , she is board or frustrated.. Are you taking her for long walks and out to play? Let her get her engery out other ways... walking , playing , fetch, and chewing on GOOD things... if she is a chewer, Bully Sticks and or Himalayan chews are the best!! Give that a try and see how you make out!

First of all, congrats on your baby, now a puppy should never be allowed to roam your home alone, WAY too many dangers for her and the risk of her ruining your stuff.. she is way too young. I tell all my adoptive parents that an X pen is a MUST have before you can bring your baby home.
you can set it up and put your baby there when you need to leave your home. you can set it up with a crate for naps, a puppy pad for puppy to relief itself and a cup of water and some food, some chew toys and a bully stick.
you can let her out when you are home and able to supervise her..

You've gotten a lot of good advice. I would definitely look into an expen. This gave us a lot of relief. We could come and go without worrying about Hot Rod getting into something or hurting himself. He had his crate, pee pad, food and water in there so if we got stuck at work or in traffice it was the end of the world during potty training.

I used bitter apple for the chewing as well got a lot of chew toys. I like the pet stages toys as well as bully sticks and himalyan chews. Please monitor your little one while giving them chew things as they get small and can be a choking hazard. I have had this happen while I am in the room with them. Very scary.

Hi, I keep my dogs with me at all times when I am home. If they're prone to wandering off I put them on a leash so I can monitor what they are doing. When I leave they go into my laundry room which has a dog door to my fenced back yard. That way they are be heated or cooled in the house yet have access to play and potty outside but they can't make mishchief to the rest of the house. The dog door was the very best thing I ever did for them and for me! :)

I am just wondering, do you let them run around with the lease on or do you secure the leash to something. I am still working with my girl Cabella and this could be another idea to try and just wasn't sure if you can keep up with her if she just drags it with her. Thanks for the idea. Sharon

That's the same one I have for my two puppies and I really love it. It is easy to take apart and put back together and you can buy two of them and make it REALLY big if you want/need to. A 36 sq in pish pad fits perfectly in the bottom and I have room for a bed, food, water and they can still move around. :)

It would be really practical to use if you travel and I have peace of mind knowing my puppies are safe and happy when I can't watch them or have to run out for a few minutes.
