Potty training We are having a very difficult time potty training Zoey. We have been training her inside on potty pads, due to her being so small and us being afraid to take her outside due to her not having all of her shots yet... she has her own personality and when she wants to go on the potty pads, she will.. then other times she will look right at me and start peeing on the carpet. She knows she is in trouble once I say her name in a stearn voice, but continuously pees and poops wherever she likes. Don't get me wrong, we have taken her outside to see how she would react... and sure enough all she wants to do is sniff around rather than release herself and once we bring her inside, there she goes straight for the carpet again!! Suggestions??? Tips?? I know Yorkies are fairly difficult to potty train, but there has got to be something out there!! |
I didn't bring mine in until she went. Yes. I know. It takes forever, but that is the only answer. |
Yeah... it just seems like everything we are doing is wrong. ;-/ |
I agree with ~yorkieusa~ but it does depend on the tempetures outside. Another way you can train her instead of potty pads is to maybe get a litter box and see what she does. It's worth a try... |
I did read this somewhere too... We got her the "Potty Patch" She seemed to use it a lot when we first got it... now all she seems to want to do is chew it up!! |

I absolutely agree. :) |
I have heard that yorkies are very hard to potty train, but Louis was potty trained (outside, no potty pads) by the time he was 16 weeks old. The best advice I can give is to take her outside every 45 mins. Keep her in a crate when you aren't watching her. Be consistent. Even if she takes a while outside, I agree with what the others said, just keep waiting until she goes. When I was potty training Louis every time I would take him outside, I would say "go pee" that way he eventually knew what I was talking about and wouldn't take forever sniffing around. Also, make sure you get a good carpet cleaning product, like Natures Miracle, and clean the spot really well to keep her from going in that spot again. Good luck, it takes a lot of patience, but I was able to get Louis potty trained during a blizzard!:D |
I had to reaf this twice to make sure it wasnt myself that had posted it. I have a zoey and im having a very hard time getting her potty trained. Shes 4 months old and just wants nothing to do with her potty box at all. For awhile she was doing ok, but now she could careless. She will even go up next to it and do #2 ugghhhhh. I can be standing right next to her and she will look up at me and then pee right there infront of me. I'm going crazy trying to figure out what to do now. I talked to the vet and they had some suggestions some of which we had already tried. no luck. I hope you start to have better luck very soon. |

It seems like these little guys/girls are FULL of attitude, they seem to say "look at me I am peeing on your new carpet" all the time with a smile on their face! I took mine out every 20-30 minutes it seemed and stood FOREVER in the middle of the night saying "go potty" my neighbors had to think I was crazy! But it all worked out, I read that smaller dogs are a lot harder to potty train, that is no joke! Mine is over a year and good now. I am amazed since the husband got a Boxer and she has been at the house for 2 weeks and is already at the door wanting to pee....??? The difference in small dogs (my yorkie is still cuter than his boxer!) :aimeeyork |
Patience is the Key! We took Bella out every hour, after she ate, played, etc. We would say "go potty" and then give her a treat IMMEDIATELY. If he wouldn't go within 10 min. we put her in her crate for 15 or so and then back out. It didn't take long before she went and then the intervals got longer. It took alot of praise, enthusiasm, and treats. But she got there. Good luck and try to stay positive even though it can be VERY frustrating! |

My 5 month old yorkie did the exact same thing..My husband put a little chain outside..we take him out, put him on the chain and leave him out there until he starts barking, which means he is done and ready to come back in..This really works and you dont have to stand there the whole time waiting for them to go...Its cold out, so it will not take them long at all.. Take him/her out every hour to begin with, or after napping/eating. Consistency is the key..Award them when they have used the bathroom with treats..When u take them out, tell them-Time to go potty. or go outside..This really worked for us..Good luck:) |

I had soo many potty troubles...and he finally got it and now I am bell training him and that has taken forever but he is getting that too and he is a year old. My biggest problem was even though he was almost fully potty trained at home, at other people's homes he would pee around (even poo once or twice) super embarrising...so recently I got him a belly band for peeing because I dont think he would poo anymore (he won't do it on his papers anymore either). And it is wonderful. If he was to pee, he would do it in the pad in his belly band...but I have found that with it on...he won't even pee...he just runs to his bell (I take it to other peoples houses). At home we dont use it...but maybe you should get that for home since your guy is so young...or diapers...if I was to do it again I would have started that immedietley!as well as bell training! Try these things out...at least you wont have accidents on the floor and then he wont smell it and try again. |
We never had good luck with the potty pads. Duke would grab them and run all over the house. I didn't want to train and retrain so we started with outside right from the start. We use "go potty" He is now 7 months and I would have to say 99% trained. We still have the occasional poopy accident. I'm thinking of trying the bell since he hasn't figured out how to tell us when he needs to go out. We still ask him about every 1-2 hours. I did get lucky though when he was little he slept all night in our bed so he rarely got up during the night. Good luck with the training. It takes a LOT of patience but you will get there.:D |
similar issue! My enzo will pee on the pad in my bedroom, but when he is playing in the hall he just pees and stares at me. I cannot train him to go outside yet because there is to much snow and he is only 2.8 pounds and he hasn't got all his shots yet because he is almost 3 months. When he does wrong and i say no and show him where he is supposed to go, he just sits there and stares at me like i'm the crazy one. |
All of these stories are EXACTLY like mine!!! She does have her moments when she will go and we praise her until we are blue in the face... then other times she will be playing (not sure if its laziness) but she will just stop playing and pee then continure to play. She definitely knows when she has done wrong though... she will look up at us and we will say "Zoey, what did you do???" and she will run and hide under the couch because she knows we can not get her... or as soon as we say "bad girl" she will do the same thing. They seriously are SOO smart and they do know when they do wrong, one day she will get it!! She will have her last set of shots next week... so as soon as she is done with those, outside she will go for Potty time!!! I figure, she is 3 months old.. I have already taught her how to sit and to shake... shes no dummy!! So why cant she understand the concept of a potty pad?? hmm... at this point, anything blue and white is fair game to her!! haha. We wont take her to any of our friends houses either because we know there will be an accident, and like someone said, very embarassing! I just keep telling myself she is a puppy and the more consistent we are with her, the better she will get!! :) |
