How long can a yorkie hold its pee? Does wieght make a difference? Hello, My wife and I are thinking of getting a Yorkie poo. The mom is about 6 pound Yorkie and the dad is 4 pound toy poodle. My question is when the dog is fully grown, will it be able to hold its pee for 9 hours. My wife and I work 9-5 plus driving time equals about 9 hours. I will be able to take the dog sometimes to my office but maybe only 1-2 times a week. I will be coming home on my lunch break for an hour and taking the dog out and playing with it, but eventually i want to get away from this when the dog is older, this is only temporarily while the dog is a pup. Does the size or weight of an adult dog determine how long a dog can holds it pee? is their a difference between a 5 and 10 pound dog on how long they can hold it? Would we want to leave water or food out during the day when it is an adult? Thanks |
That's a good question but I don't know if there is an actuall answer. A puppy, they say, can hold it urine for 1hr for each month that it is. So a puppy that is 5mos old should be able to hold it's pee for 5hrs increasing this time as it get's older. Some Yorkies are very hard to train, it seems to be a fact for the breed. I know some member's have small Yorkies who are fully trained all day. Buddy is a larger boy, weighing 16lbs and he's good for 9 1/2hrs. We sleep in on weekends and have gone as long as 10 hrs without any problem. Weather this has anything to do with his size I have no idea. He has no water during that time because were sleeping. If your baby is a small one leaving a pee pad down during the time your away may be a good idea if you think he can't or won't hold it. In general, yes, Yorkies can hold it for 9hrs, depends on the Yorkie. Good luck and welcome. |

I leave a pee pad down for Teddi but she might use it once a week...sometimes she goes a week without using it. Before I go to work I take her for a walk and she poops once and pees about 6 times (so I think she gets it all out of her). When we get home I feed her breakfast and I go to work. When I get home from work (about 8 or 9 hours later) I take her out to pee (sometimes she does and sometimes she doesn't). Then right before I feed her dinner (about 7:30 pm) I take her out to pee. She then eats dinner and I take her out before she goes to bed and she will pee and sometimes poop. Oh and she is 3 years old and 3 lbs. |
Pixel is only 4 pounds and I leave at 8 am for work and don't get home until 5:30 - 5:45. I leave him in an ex-pen with a pee pad every day (just in case), but he probably only uses it about once a month or even less. So he can easily hold it 9.5 hours. :D He also holds it all night while we sleep (8 hours). Have fun with your puppy if you get it and I think you should ;) |
UGH! I'm glad you're Yorkie's can go that long! It's rare for mine to go more than 4-5 hours. Most nights we are up between midnight and 2:00 AM cause she has to go out to pee. My Biewer...he goes all night without having to pee. He sleeps like a dream. However, my Yorkie is just a bit more busy and she doesn't hold it that long. Currently I am working on convincing her that she DOES NOT have to pee in the middle of the night. Some nights I win, some nights she wins. Good luck! |
Sydney is 4 years old , she is about 10 lbs. and she goes out about three to four times a day ( she lets us know when she needs out) ... but she can hold it up to 10 hours without a problem. If we are gone for a long period of time , she does fine. Her last time out at night is about 9/10 p.m. and she doesn't go out again till morning , around 7 a.m. or so with no problems. She was never pad trained , only outside trained. CHloe is 19mo. old and just under 3 lbs. so she uses her pad alot. I have a pad out for her at night and in the morning it is used atleast once , so she doesn't seem to hold it to long . I know she can go atleast 6 hours if she had to. When she sleeps with us ( rarely) she will go about 6/7 hours before waking us up to potty. |
we stopped putting the pads out when Ruby was over a year old. She holds it all day 8 hours and during the night too. Rarely do we have to get up at night with her. It just takes a while to train them. Ruby is about 6 and a half pounds and almost 3 years old.:aimeeyork |
Little Miss Apple is 14 months old and weighs 4 lbs. 14 oz. (or thereabouts), and she is good for about 6 hrs....I try to come home on my lunch break, after 4 or 5 or 6 hrs., and she's usually good, but if I wait over 61/2 hrs. it's pee pee on the floor time :(...At night, she can go about 7 1/2 hrs.....Buzzy Boy, the brother weighs about the same, but is only 6 months old, and he is on about the same schedule, but he uses pee pee pads...I\'m hoping that the baby teaches the older sister how to go to the pee pee pad....Btw, he won\'t go outside, like sister...just pee pee pads....And she won\'t do pee pee pads, just outside...What\'s a Mom to do :rolleyes: |
Lexi was able to hold it for 8 hours at 5 months old. At 2 years old, she can hold it for 10 hours. She is a bigger yorkie weighing in at about 10lbs. |
Bella\'s Info Bella is 3.9 lb. and 14 months old. She potties for the last time at 7:45 p.m. or so and is in her crate for night time from 8:00 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. She does fine holding her urine for long periods of time. She\'s gone 9 hours. She has NEVER gone in her ex-pen or crate. But, she is more likely to go every 3 hours or so when she is up and loose in the house. Hope this helps. Good luck. |
Thank you very much for every ones input. I didn\'t think of it before about leaving a puppy pad out. When should I introduce pee pads to the dog when I am trying to teach it to go outside? What is the best method of doing both? |
I have a Yorkie that I got 2 months ago.she is 2 1/2 years old and she seems to do fine during the day I usually check on her at lunch, but she keeps peeing in her crate at night. I put up her food and water by 6:30 and I take her out one last time at 10:00. I wake her up at 6 and usually she has peed. I would think she could hold it since she does during the day. any suggestions? |
Mine made it a LONG time in his crate when he was little. Like first night home 4 hours, and second night 8 hours... he\'s been a blessing to train. We use a grid system. it\'s a different option from the pee pads. |
