Potty training a 1 year old from pee pad to outside? Ok I need advise. Bailey is 1 year old now and she is 100% trained on her pee pad.:) she also has never been kennel and always had baby gates up and she was in the kitchen during the day while we are at work. Now I want to start training her to go outside and I know the best way to do that is kennel train them. Is this going to be to much for her. She is use to being free roam of the kitchen during the day. I will say her bed is a kennel, although she has never been locked in it she does go in it and lays down or sometimes will sleep on top of it. Also if I do this should I go home during my lunch to let her out and pee or will she be good for 8 hours. I change her pee pad every morning and sometimes when I get home there is nothing on the pee pad while other times there is pee and poop. One more thing I also have a roommate that is randomly home here and there as his job is not a steady monday to friday job like us. Is this going to confuse Bailey? When my roommate it is home can he and should he keep her in the kennel ( I prefer not as she will bark to get out if she knows someone is home) I know he will not be sonsisted on bring her outside though. (lazy guy) Also should I keep a pee pad out to her regular place incase we dont bring her out or notice she needs to go outside because she never had to ask to go potty. It was always there for her? ( I will put bells by the door and try to train her to ring the bell before going outside??):p And the reason I am doing al of this is because I am moving back home this summer and were I am going to live she needs to potty outside. any advise will help. :DSorry for all the long questions. thanks Lysiane & Bailey:animal36:animal36:animal36:animal36 |
Get some bells to hang on the door knob and try to teach her to ring them whenever she wants to go outside to play. But, first, start working the piddle pads closer to the door as time goes by.:) |

Never even thought of using the bells right away even to go play outside. Thanks and for moving the pee pad closer to the door it might be hard because it is located in a cuby hole under the stairs which is located in our kitchen and if I move the pee pad then it will have to go infront of my fridge and then will reach carpet and like 12 stairs as I live in a basement suite. If I move it I have to move it like 5 feet at a time at least and when it is on the carpet (rented house) I am scared she would miss and pee on the carpet that is not ours...hmm tough tough call thanks for your help though:):) |
Yes, well, I see your problem.:D Try the bells. Mine rings the bells whether to go outside to potty or go outside to play. |

The bells are the first thing on my list. Thank you:p |
You're very welcome. I'd like to hear how it goes. At first, Kacee was ringing them all of the time. Then she got the hang of it. |
Ok so since I can't move the pee pad is it ok for me to kennel for 8 hours or should i go on my lunch to let her out? |
If you're close enough, I'd go home and let her out at lunch. 8 hrs is a long, long time in a crate. |
yeah I am pretty close and I have an hour lunch from the office so I don't mind at all |
BUMP. just curious to know if anyone else has diff advice for teh other questions. thanks |
I would love to see more responses to this also. I am picking up a 1 year old tomorrow that is trained to pee pads and I would like her to be trained to go outside like the others most of the time so I don't have to keep the pads laying around everywhere. (Although I do keep a pee pad in their ex-pen for when I am gone and at night.) |
I leave my pee pad trained girls with my Mom & Dad when I go away on vacation. My mom thinks pee pads are gross so insists they do their business outside, however she does leave a pad down. She treated them as if they were new puppies taking them out after dinner, and first thing in the morning and after play-time. The girls got treats and praise for pee pee outside. After a few days they were dual pee pee trained! We'll sort of, they understand the pattern and they do enjoy doing pee pee outside. This past Christmas one of the girls stared at the door , my Dad took her out and sure enough....she did pee pee. They seldom use a pee pad at my mom's because they keep them on the routine. I have always had better luck outdoor training opposed to pee pee pads, I really think it's a pleasure for them to pee outside. Good Luck!:animal-pa:animal-pa |
Yes, I too am quite interested at any advice. My Biewer is pee pad trained and Yorkie is outside trained. My Biewer will pee pee and poopy outside if he happens to have to go when we have Sophie outside. What he doesn't know to do is to ASK to go outside. I'm not quite sure how to teach that. It's now in the teens (temps.) and he has absolutely NO desire to go outside but I think when Spring comes I'm going to take the advice of outside regularly and PRAISE TREATS when he goes. Heck, he gets treats now when he goes outside with Sophie. Even if he dosn't actually go potty. Hmmm...we're gonna have to figure something out. I do believe I've spoiled him too much! LOL |
I must have forgotten to make sure Kacee went outside last thing before we went to bed last night - now I don't remember.lol Anyway, she woke me up at 3 a.m. kissing me all over my face. Then she went down her stairs and after a bit I heard the door bells ringing.:D I have her also trained on pads, but the pads are in my attached garage. I got up and let her out there and back to bed we went. Bet I don't forget again! She never, ever gets up in the middle of the night. |
