PEtsmart Puppy Classes any goosd?My vet said Ralphie needed obedient classes!!=) Ralphie went to the vet today to get his eye looked at.Well he kept being squirmy and he did get through his check up...but he was quite the little worm. So the vet recommended we get him into classes. I feel like my kid got in trouble at school. So who has taken puppy classes at Petsmart and how were they? |
well in your dog's defense- he is a puppy- puppies squirm- maybe your vet was recommending it for socialization- i doubt he is anything other than a normal playful puppy!!! The classes are great for socialization but it depends on who your instructor is- i would ask for a schedule so you can go and watch the teachers before you sign up for their class. |
Ruger was just neutered, so I'm waiting a couple of weeks to take him down to PetSmart for classes. I talked to the trainer, and I would say it all depends on the trainer and has nothing to do with PetSmart. I really liked this guy and what he had to say. I've also observed some classes there and the people seemed very happy with what their dog was learning. Interview the trainer before you make any decisions. I have no idea if any of this will help with squirming. |

I agree. Max had one on one training at Petsmart. I wasn't thoroughly impressed. I didn't really learn much more than I learned watching Victoria Stilwell or Cesar Milan. Max wasn't a puppy at the time, it was right after I adopted him and we had a problem with biting. If he were a puppy, I'd consider the class for socialization purposes though. |
A friend of mine had her Yorkie enrolled at PetsMart for training. They asked her to not bring him back. I think some of the trainers don't like small dogs and the big dogs are sometimes curious about the small dogs. I can't remember if they told her he was too distracted or too much of a distraction. She didn't go back. |
I don't think it has anything to do with Petsmar in general. it has to do with the trainer.. Do your research ask the trainer to sit through one or two of her classes to watch and see how it is like. search around town for diff trainers. Goodluck with everything. Sometimes when you enroll yourself in trainig it is more for you to learn and then pass on that knowledge on how to train your dog to your dog..lol good luck :) |

Make sure that they have classes for small breed dogs. I enrolled Pixie in puppy kindergarten class and I went for the first meeting and found out that she was the only small breed dog and that they have 15 minutes of free play with NO interaction from the owner and I declined the class and lost part of my money. I just didn't think it would be fair for Pixie to have to interact in free play with a two great danes a siberian huskie and a golden retriever. I was afraid for her safety. So I am training Pixie myself and I will socialize her by maybe a small breed social. |
I used our local PetSmart puppy training class and I found it useful as I never owned a puppy or dog for that matter. They used clicker training and I liked that. Sophie loved the class and to this day everytime we pull up in front of Pet Smart she goes bonkers! She loved all her little friends that she had in class. Only drawback? They didn't separate the BIG puppies from the small puppies. |
Hannah is now in advanced classes. The trainer is wonderful! Like others have previously stated, check out the trainer before enrolling in class. Also Hannah has always been in classes with big dogs. However, they are not allowed to socialize with each other until the trainer does some guided dog socialization. |
