10 wk old puppy potty probs.. need advice! Hi all! This is my first post, so forgive it being long winded if it gets that way. We have a new almost 10 wk old 1-2lb yorkie who's name is Gizmo (after 2 days of deliberation between 7 people :) ) Well, we are unsure how to go about potty training him. I did buy a litter box and was trying that, because it seemed an easier idea. Well, he did pee in it a few times, but wouldn't poo in it, (he hides to do that usually) and then he would go nuts and get cat litter all over himself, up his nose, and the floor! I know he would probably do better outside, but it's so cold out now, and I know they can't stand the cold for long. I took him out last night, and not only did he get chilled and shivering, but I think he also picked up a flea (which makes me feel dirty...I know, OCDish LOL) I have read other posts, but nothing really pertaining to the weather. Is it ok to take them out in the cold to potty? Or would it be better to just train him for indoors? Oh, btw, he will NOT use the puppy pads! I tried putting them in the litter box, he just lays on them. And on the floor as well....HELP!! |
i understand completely about the cold...i just got my 9 week old yorkie 2 days ago and he is being litter trained also except im using puppy pads at first he laid on them but today whn i woke up i put in the litter box and said goo potty he didnt do it then he drank some water thn i put him back in ther and said go potty then he did it i praised him then he took a nap i woke him up and put him in it and say go potty so i believe if we keep it up and keep puttin him in there after meals and playin and wakin up he will get the drift..:D |
I hope so. We went to church last night and gated him off in the kitchen and when we came home, he had peed on the pad I left by the back door. He is not pooping alot though, so it's hard to catch him at that. |

My pups don't leave my house prior to 12 weeks of age and at that time they have been completely pee pad trained by their mothers......One of the benefits of leaving pups with mom until 12 weeks of age or more. They train them in so many ways. However, when they do go home, new families may want to change their potty training to going outside. I then tell them not to expect miracles until the pup is older. Pups are going through so many changes, especially teething, which makes them very uncomfortable and their attention span is not focused. |
He's way to young :) I pee pad train my puppies on washable pee pads before they go to their news homes but they are babies and are not able to hold it and will go when they have to go! They will also go frequently. I would start your baby with plenty of pee pads, in small areas (too big of areas just confuse them) Don't expect miracles and just take one day at a time. Congrats on your new baby!!! Quote:

Here you go.....I love Laurie Souza......if there is anything wrong, she will replace. Shipping is free. They last forever, I still have some that I ordered 5 years ago. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. The best investment I made was buying the book, "How to House Train Your Dog in Seven Days." It does take longer than 7 days, and especially with yours being so young, but it works. Definitely do not give your puppy run of the house. Keep him in a bare-floor area for playtime, feeding, potty. When he's older and is getting better at using the puppy pads, then afford him a bit more running room, but supervised. I know what you mean about it being too cold out. Same here. Sydney is puppy pad trained. She's seven months and still can have an accident. If we have to leave her at home, we leave her in her crate for her safety and to protect the house. Let us know how it goes. |
As you might already know Yorkie as most of the smaller dog breed are a little difficult to train. I have a Beagle/Pekingese he is one year old he is GREAT with potty training but took a while for him to understand that he should only potty outside. Now i have a 4 month old Yorkie. She knows when we take her outside that she needs to go potty and she does it. I started her with crate training her so she didn't go in her crate she passed that with flying colors, we got her when she was 12 weeks and i can say she honestly has not gone in her crate. Potty though she still has accidents MINOR ones in the house. :) Good luck with your little Love bug. |
Thanks so much!!! You really helped me!!!! |

Thanks for the advice...I see change already! |
If I ever caught mine having an accident (in the act), then I would say "Uh-oh!" It was funny, because I can remember the exact time when I knew she understood what she had done. She stood there looking at me:D while I was cleaning the floor. Yes. She was looking right in my face. Of course, I was lecturing her, too. After that time, it was a breeze. To this day, if I say "Uh-oh" for any other reason, it still gets her full attention.:D |
You all are so awesome! I know he is just a baby, and really different from other puppies being so little and all. I know what you mean about them needing to be kept with their momma for the 12 wks. The breeder we got him from lets his go at 6 wks!! I couldn't believe that.. but I am glad he couldn't get rid of Gizmo until he gave him to us! (We got him for $150 because he didn't know that his female was in heat, and wasn't sure which male was the daddy, so he couldn't register them ;-) ) Anyway, any success is a success to me, and I know he will get it in time. I keep him in the kitchen / living room with the rest of the house gated off. But I do bring his crate in my bedroom at night. He is a little sweetie, and already runs to meet me when I come home from school. Thanks for all the advice guys!! |

You could do it also, if you want to have him AKC registered. Good luck...... |
