Train to Pee Outside or on Pee Pads? So my baby is 5 months old and I’ve been TRYING to potty train him on pee pads. I work so it's hard for me to train him because I'm not there during the day....my grandparents are there to keep him company but are not able to train him cause they are not that agile. The question I have is...should I try and train him to pee outside rather than on pee pads? Take him outside once before work and then when I get back from work? Or should I just keep him on the pads? Also...when they get older do you switch them to pee outside or stick with the pads for good? Thanks for all your help!!! |
I would try to do both. Take him out in the morning, when you get home and before bed. While you are gone I would have him in an exercise pen with the floor covered with pee pads. Gradually decrease the size of the pee pad covered area until there is only one pad in the pen. (over several days or weeks). They learn really fast to go on the pads only and outside. Mine do both and it is the best of both worlds. |

don't give up if you want to go with the pee pads. I followed the suggestions noted and it worked. :) |
Eh, mine uses the pee pads IF I put there where she has her accidents. She does much better with whining to go outside and as long as I am always listening, she does really well. I am hoping to eventually get away from pee pads at this point since she is doing so well with outside. |
from experience I would suggest outside...i have mine trained on pads and i truly regret it...i live in an apt so the pads are on a tray in my bathroom...my bathroom is large but i still hate they are in there...definately outside if it is safe for you to go out at night with the puppy...it wasnt for me so thats why i didn't train her outside |
It all depends on your situation and what will work best for you :) I started Lola on the pads and she does great...she will also go outside when we're on walks.. the pads are very convenient but the downside, some dog will confuse the area rugs as pads...so keep that in mind... |
I have been trying to figure this out too. I chose the xlg crate and I have a potty pad at the back and their bed and toy at the front. Brewster is perfect, he will hold it till I get home. He is perfect. The other two struggle some times. Sometimes they will push the bed at the back on top of the pad and pee and poo up front on nothing. Other days, they do great. I think I am gonna try the ex pen next and see what happens. I am gone 4 hours at a time, but I think they get bored. Or I have even wondered if they are punishing me for being gone. Just be patient. It should get better. |
Mine do both. Pee pads come in handy when we have cold weather like this. |
