When is the best time for socializing Hello All, My Mr. Bailey was the only pup in his liter and has had no contact with other dogs other that mother and father. Since we have to wait another mo. before we can take him around to dogs (due to lack of vaccinations) are we missing a critical time for socializing. Mr Bailey is 10 wks now. |
I think you'll be ok. I started socializing Lexi when I got her at 4 months. Before I adopted her , she had been exposed to kids, cats and her brother. However I'm not sure how much socialization she had besides that. Socialization is more than meeting other dogs. Until he gets his shots you can still socialize him with people, places and situations. For example riding in a car, or meeting a group of friends. |
I think you will be good too. We took Gracie in the car and too a lot of different places with us. She loves to go! |
Now is the time for children and other people. Especially children and they have to be gentle. If you get around other animals, remember, you are his defense. The more love and affection that you give the puppy now, you will receive it 100 times more from the puppy when the puppy gets older. |
Now! I know some people will wait until weeks after all their shots are completed but I believe socializing should be done asap! Obviously, NO dog parks, or Petsmart, or places where they can get diseases but find dogs you know are healthy (friends dogs, etc) at least. I do believe Jackson is a better dog because of it. He was exposed to many different dogs & people at an early age (healthy dogs, my parents, my friends, etc) and he seriously has never met a dog he doesn't like. I don't know, I just personally believe the earlier the better  and my vet was fine with him going out in our backyard after his 2nd set of shots was completed. I think exposing them to the world is very important early on. |
Puppies are normally very social i8f they were not abgused. They are curious and love to meet other dogs. It won't be too late after he has had his shots. But as others said, expose him to as many different situations a possible in the meanwhile. |
1 Attachment(s) I've been taking Chuchi a lot to the park lately (about 5 times a day) because he is already 5 months and from what I understand has few weeks left in his imprinting stage. The first dog he met was a pincher (only dog smaller than him :)) and he was terrified. After another couple weeks at the park and playing with a beagle that at first would always dominate him he is good at "getting used to dogs" but still seems afraid and has his tail way down at first when they come near. Any suggestions on how to help him with this initial fear of getting used to dogs?? Thanks!! Aron Attachment 305495 |

This is exactly what I tell the families when they adopted my puppies. Vet will tell you to keep the dog inside, the spy will tell you that socializing early is VERY important for the puppy. I have study dog science and strongly believed that the dog need to be exposed early. BTW An other thing you can do to socialized the yorkie puppy is to carry the puppy around in your purse. He won't catch anything from there but will get used to noises/car/people. |
