Yorkie Not Social! Why is it that my yorkie Charlie doesn't like to be around other dog and will run unless its a female dog! |
How old is Charlie? Was he socialized often as a puppy? Is he a rescue? Some more information might help us give advise :) Our Doberman will shy away from other dogs, always has. Even in puppy class she didn't want to play with the other puppies, she just wanted to hide behind us. It's not that she isn't social, we've been socializing her since she was a puppy and she was born into a very social environment with kids, dogs and other animals. She just is careful around things she doesn't know (unlike our yorkie, who is completely fearless). |
Charlie a year old, wasn't rescue had him since he was 8 weeks, and he was socialized as a puppy. |
It just depends on their personality. Uni is very socialized with people, and with dogs, but she much prefers people to other dogs. At meet ups she will hang out with the people or explore, hardly ever plays with the other dogs (except Kaji :) ) Maybe he's just more of a people dog. I've only seen Uni romp in the grass ONE TIME with Kaji, no other dog. She doesn't seem to care for them  |
If you want to socialize, I would just start with one on one and let him see how much fun it is to play with other dogs. Is he neutered? |
It's practice practice practice ..... If the dog as a pup wasn't socialized ... meaning that he wasn't around other dogs he's going to be either threatened or frightened around them because he doesn't know the doggy lingo or body language Best way to counter that is to get him around other dogs one on one |

May I ask if there's a reason you're not neutering him? Neutered dogs typically get along/do better with other dogs. |
I'm trying my best to get Chuchi socialized at a young age but feel I'm running out of time. He is 5 1/2 months old now. I have been giving him as much exposure to dogs as possible. Left him in a dog camp for 5 days where he spent his time running around with a 5 month old beagle that at first would dominate him (pin him down and bark) and now he can play (although she still beats him :( lol). What would be the best method to have him not fear the dogs in the park. I let him play with them in the park but many times he tries to hide behind me and I move to let him play but he still needs to gain much more confidence Any tips are GREATLY appreciated! :D |

I actually got Chuchi a bit late (4 months) and poor puppy got sick and spent a week at the vet with stomache problems :( Thankfully he has recovered great and advanced a ton in the past month and a half. He seems to be getting better with other dogs but it is taking him a while to gain his full confidence |
I'm starting to come to the conclusion that it's largely genetic. I've been working with Thor for over a year and I have yet to see him play with another dog. He goes to a special small doggy daycare 2x/week that is run by certified ASPCA trainers. He has gone for months and they said he played a bit with one dog recently. So while I still think soialization is a big factor, a lot of it is just built in. I still think Thor can get much more comfortable with his own kind, he'll always be more of a people dog. |
My Dachshund will play with any dog (that is neutered) but ZZ will NOT play with another dog, she'd rather be on her leash walking with her head up like she owns the world with me. |
I think a lot of it might be their personality. We've had three yorkies over the past 20 years and they've had three totally different personalities. Our first, Macho, never met a stranger. Canine, feline, human, everyone was his friend. He'd beg treats, give kisses, play with anyone. Fuzzy, our second, didn't really care. Her attitude with other people and animals was ok, you're here. If you want to pet me that's cool, if you don't, whatever. Our little girl now, Sophia, is uber clingy. She won't play with other dogs. If people come to the house she either barks her head off from behind my legs or she asks to be picked up and then refuses to look at them. Guess she thinks if she doesn't see them they don't exist:rolleyes:. When we're out at the park, Petsmart, etc. she'll approach other people and sniff, won't approach other dogs though. And any cat she sees other than her "sister" is lunch. |
