Male Marking Frustration I have a 16 month old male. He weighs about 6-7 pounds and he has not been fixed yet, but has never bred (I dont plan to breed) I have been having such trouble with him marking inside the house. I have a fenced yard and he is out all the time and never has real 'pee' accidents in the house. Its the marking (Especially on shoes!) that i am struggling with. I am home all day with him and I am attentive and he is rewarded for when he goes outside. When I catch him lifting his leg inside the house i do clap my hands and tell him "NO". He knows he's not supposed to, he is a smart little guy. I know you all here are the yorkie experts and i know this has been discussed in the past, but do you think if i went ahead and got him fixed hed quit? I had planned to get it done anyway, I have just been putting it off. I'm such a sissy and I know I'll be worried sick about him. |

To alliviate your frustration and his, put a belly band on him when he's in the house. |
Well, on the up side, i am about to redo my entire downstairs with a kitchen reno, new flooring, carpeting, furniture. there shouldnt be much scent left when im done. There is no way to train him out of it then? |

why didn't/don't you fix him? Vet told me it's better for the dogs' overall health to spay/neuter, and it may preclude marking. Two birds... |
oh 16 months may be a bit too late. May want furniture covers... If it were me, I'd definitely put something between his stuff and yours :p (bad joke - couldn't resist). But, seriously... |
marking my little male yorkie was an unneutered male:eek: when I got him (yorkie rescue) the belly band worked fine;) (can be purchased at Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue Adoptions and Shop, go to "store"), you can make your own... I kept him in his cage (after immediately neutering him) when I couldn't watch him, and correct him... he has been housetrained for about 7 years now.... patience and you will have a wonderful little guy!:animal36 roxanne |
marking forgot to tell you, get something that neutralizes dog urine to clean with.. even though your house smells cleanto us. your dog can smell it :eek:and go back to the same spot... your vet will have something or any pet store... roxanne |

what does the belly band do? |
Definitely get him neutered ASAP. I got Scruffs and he was marking at 13 months, but when I finally decided to keep him I got him neutered. He still marked for another few weeks after that, but then he stopped. He occasionally pees (but those instances are my fault), and it is a pee spot on the floor, not marking spot. I still think you have a good shot of him not marking if you get him neutered really soon. Otherwise, it isn't going to stop and you need to get a belly band. |
Getting him neutered will help. In the mean time get a belly band. I have heard that some dogs stop after wearing belly bands because they don't like peeing on themselves. |

My male dog marks too. He is 3 yrs old..is not neutered. We are getting him neutered...don't really know why we put it off for so long. But we use belly bands. Just make sure to change them a lot, and don't put them so tight cause Teddy got a urinary infection once. He's better now. :) |
I didn't mean to say that it will stop all dogs, but based on responses I have gotten from people that have bought belly bands from me, some people have had this happen. I'm sure, like with everything, it all depends on the dog. |
