Help on litter box training and crate training!!!
 

Well I am new to this forum and I have a 5 month old little boy named Nigel. I started to train him out our garage side door and he was doing really good but then decided we should try a doggie door that can only go out our laundry room door to make a long story short he does really well going out the laundry room door doggie door. My problem is he hates going in his crate and will cry and poop all in it. I tried the small one already and decided to try the big crate (since we have both) and divide it with bedding in front and I am trying to start the litter box to put in the back half of cage. Everytime I try to show him the litter box, I put him in it and say Go Potty, he hops out and goes out the doogie door. I will be starting back to work and he will have to be in the cage when I do. I can't leave the doggie door open during day unattended because fence is down in a particular area so when home we are watching his every move. Snow is on ground and can't fix fence yet. He had a set back with the snow but is now going both pee and poop on it. I don't want to confuse him but need to do something about the pooping all over the cage problem. He will run in it and get the treat I put in it and run to living room to eat it. OTHER THAN THAT HE HATES THE CAGE!!! Any suggestions please would help me!

Well he is only a little puppy , small bladder and will not be able to hold it while you are at work.. If you are working an 8 hour day that is a very very long time to leave a puppy locked in a cage (IMO), do you think you can get an expen. One Step Ahead Baby - Deluxe Secure Surround Play Yard

Put a shower curtain down and put his litter box or pee pad , toys, crate, etc in there so he can get out and run and play while your gone to work.. ??

Also if you are trying to outside train him maybe you would be better off using the www.pottypatch.com since it is similar to grass.

Its going to be confusing to your puppy , I was told to pick one method and stick with it either pee pads or going outside.

I think the exersize pen would be a great idea if you plan on keeping him in the crate over night to sleep then all day while you work, that may be way to much time confined and he will surely have accidents.

if the potty patch intrests you they sell both the potty patch and ex pens at petco. There are others on here that have pictures of the set up they use,
Put down a shower curtain liner ( to prevent pee or poop on your floor)
use an excercise pen, put his crate in there, a bed, toys and pee pad, litter box or potty patch , this way he will most likely not use the bathroom where he sleeps, he will be able to get some excercise in and play while your gone to work and have a nice bed or crate or both to sleep in when he is resting? Nigel is sleeping with us and does very well we already have the routine of going potty when we first get up he usually will pee pee then 10min later have to poop. We have that part down pretty good. I decided today to try basically your idea....our laundry room is pretty large and we have his cage in there food and doggie door there, so I closed off the doggie door layed papers and his litter box right in front off the doggie door exit then put a gate in front of the entrance door that divides the kitchen from the laundry room...that way we can watch him and he can see us out as well. I'm leaving the door open to his cage so he can rest in there too. So far he is just barking at the gate and doesn't like it either. I think he will just have to get use to it. I do feel I have a little more control this way and monitoring him will be easier. The house is pretty large and we usually block off the back bedroom but this is better. He has been spoiled to having free reign since my daughter has been home from school he hasn't had to go in a cage. I was coming home from lunch and taking him out but he wouldn't always go he also likes to dig up worms and eat them in the yard. Hope that doesn't hurt him.

Oh also the laundry room floor is tile so think it will be okay...since I already bought the litter box and stuff I think I will start trying this if it doesn't work I will try the grass patch...Thanks for the good tips though...tell me what you think.
