Puppy training classes? We are thinking of signing up for puppy training classes. Has anyone else gone this route? Penny is on 16 weeks now and a love. We want her to learn the basics or rather us learn the basics. You know, sit, stay, no nipping and all important come when called. She knows her name and knows what no means. Doing very well with potty training. The bell works best with her. Have had big dogs in the past and never even thought of classes. However; a Yorkie is so different then any dog we have ever had. Almost humanistic traits, as my DH says. Thanks in advance for your comments. |
Puppy classes can be great! Good experience for owner & puppy. The key thing is a 'good' trainer. Try to find out what you can, or phone number so you can talk to trainer prior to signing up to get a sense of if you like him/her. |
Good thing to do. Will help with socialization, and will give you tools in dealing with any problems that may occur later on. Plus, it's fun! |
We really liked our puppy obedience class. Went to the local humane society for them. Was really great to have him more socialized and he learned a few tricks too that we were having a hard time with (like roll over). :) |
I'm going to my first class tomorrow morning. I'll let you know how it goes! |
Try this book!! We took Lily to puppy training at Petsmart and they recommended this book and it real good. "How To Behave So Your Dog Behaves" by "Sophia Yin, D.V.M." The training classes were good for her to be around other dogs but other than that she didn't get much out of it because the trainer we had said that "he prefered bigger dogs" and another thing was the training was mostly with "treats" and she can only eat so much of that stuff because she isn't like the bigger dogs in that sense either!! Good Luck!! |
I went to my first class today (also Petsmart) and though it was a good experience. It gave bella some time to socialize, and I learned a few things. I am cutting Wellness treats into very tiny pieces and mixing them with broken up bits of her kibble for training treats. I've started using the clicker and she is picking it up quickly. |
Signed up Thanks so much for the imput. We signed up today for Penny to start puppy classes Jan 23 for 6 Sat. Our Vet recommends this gal. Also our groomer that we went to for our cocker recommends her. All in all Penny is doing very well. She comes to a whistle, where she got that we don't know. She is learning what NO means. We have to yell when she starts the biting bit. She rings the bell to go outside to pee. She likes the wee pads for pooping. I know that will change come this summer tho as she loves the outdoors. What is sad is we have 3/4 acre all fenced but she can walk through. So this Spring we will put chicken wire around the bottom half in case she gets lose from the leash. Yes, we will have to use the leash as we have hawks. We feed the quail everyday and the hawks come in for a dinner every now and then. I saw for the first time this last summer Redtail hawks across the road fighting. Those were big birds, all I could think about was getting our old dog in the house. Guess I am rambling here. Thanks for all the advice. |
