HELP!! Yorkie puppy uses bathroom in crate -- ALL THE TIME!
 

I am new to the forum and desperately need some advice/help. I have a 4 month old male Yorkie who weighs 2 pounds. No matter how many times I take this puppy outside, he will pee and poop in his crate. I have him in a small crate and even sectioned off so he only had room to lay down. It doesn't matter to him....he still eliminates in his crate. He will sit in it, stand in it...whatever! When I take him outside he understands and uses the bathroom....give him lots of praises....bring him back inside and put him in his crate and you guessed it, within an hour, he has messed in his crate. Even without food or water, he will find something to urinate in his crate. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am having a similar problem. My new little female poops in her crate. She is 12 weeks old and is virtually housebroke when she is free to roam, and already and ringing bells on her own to go out, but when we leave her in her crate, she poops! She has been one of the most stubborn crate trainers I have ever had. I am chalking it up to separation anxiety and her stressing herself to the point she poops. She literally cries and barks the whole time, and the most she is ever left at one time is two hours max. I hope you get some good answers here, I will be watching too.

Maybe try sizing up to an X pen and cover the floor with pad and gradually decrease pad to one as he adjusts. Try keeping him out until he poops twice. How does he act in the crate? Is he quiet or agitated?

Thank you for your response. My dog is perfectly content in his crate. Never barks to get out. At least I can't complain about this behavior. As a matter of fact, he is the only Yorkie I know who isn't a barker. Never barks at anything - lol. My primary issue is really that he is urinating in his crate. Even with no water, he will urinate in his crate maybe 3 times in an hour and a half....I timed/watched him tonight. I wonder if he could have a urinary tract infection???

That's a good possibility... vet check time! At least before you make any changes that won't work if he has an UTI.

What are you feeding your puppy and how often is he eating?

Our puppy usually eats 3 times a day. He would eat all day if he could. I have never seen a puppy eat like this one does. He is on all dry food -- Eukanuba

Personally I would start with getting him on a better food. Eukanuba is has a lot of low quality grain and lots of fillers. That could account for him being hungry all the time.

I would recommend a food like Solid Gold Wee Bits or Natural Balance puppy. Personally I feed Chicken Soup dry puppy food and mine all do very well on it. I am sure others can recommend a better food also.

If he is peeing often then I agree he should be checked by a vet.

Just heard back from the vet. Our dog doesn't have any trace of a urinary tract infection. Guess that is a good thing...but now I can't blame his behavior on a medical conditionl lol.

I feed Natural Balance. I think your dog just does not like being in the crate. They can outsmart us more often that any of us want to admit.

Well, if the dog doesn't like being in the crate he certainly has me fooled. He will go in his crate willingly and does not make a peep. He has never cried or barked to get out of his crate. He usually snuggles up and goes right to sleep. I have to get him to stop eliminating in the crate. He has to fit into our lifestyle. We have another dog who is also crated and her crate is right beside our Yorkies.

Does he make any noise before he uses the bathroom in the crate? There was a thread about someone who put a bell around the dog while in the crate and whenever they heard the bell they would take him outside. He is only 4 months and 2 lbs so he can't really hold his bladder that long. Good Luck!

My 10-month old yorkie always peed in his crate, no matter what we did. Then when he had free roam of the house he would return to his crate to pee on it or in it. Recently, we removed the crate and placed pee pads in the same spot. He now goes regularly on those pee pads.

In the past week we've only had a few accidents! The downside is that we don't put him in a crate when we are gone anymore. We've been leaving him out downstairs, gating off the steps so he can't roam on the carpeted areas. I would not have done this any sooner than 10 months though. We trust him so much more now than we did even a month ago. At night he sleeps in bed with us, so we don't miss the crate too much.

Our pup is 4 months now and a few weeks ago we had a breakthrough, he managed to go through the night without wetting or soiling in his crate. What really helped us was we found out he had some intestinal parasites (giardia) despite him being wormed. We wormed him again and changed his food to a good quality one with no cereal in (orijen). Within a day or two of changing to orijen he was clean and dry in the crate through the night. We still have accidents in one or two places in the house, but these are less frequent.

So sorting out the food is really more important than you think. Change gradually though.

OMG~ this is my FIRST post, and I have been searching for someone with the same problem, Our Macie is 8 weeks old, she was my kids Christmas present ,and I am SO frustrated with her already, she pees in her crate every little bit if she is awake, she freaks out crying and trying to climb out and it looks like just enough that she is accidentally peeing because she is stressed.she dont like her crate,but she pees on the peepads alot but i can deal with the accidents in the house more than I can deal with peeing in her cage.....i could even deal with her crying and barking in the cage , but the accidents are unbearable, I thought I was ready to do this, but Im so jealous, my friend got a yorkie poo and he is doing better than any dog Ive ever heard of.
It cant be because her bladder is so small, becuase she will sleep in her bed(couch bed thingy) for a few hours, or sleep with me for several hours also and she dont pee, and I have made it so small of an area ,then I have taken the cushion and blankets out so she wont pee in it . we were letting her lay on blankets so it wouldnt wet the cushion,but I dont know what to do! please please tell me it will get better, because the thing I feared for so long about getting a dog, is that I wouldn't be able to deal with it and I would break my kids heart and get rid of it, but I do love her, so I dont want to do that..but Im tired already !
