10 months old and still not reliable My Dillon will be 10 months old on the 11th. While he is getting much better at potty training, he will still pee in the house unless I watch him like a hawk!! While he is crated, he holds his pee for several hours (sometimes up to 8 hours) but when he has run of the house (with me watching) I need to take him out every 1 1/2 to max 2 hours or he will pee in the house. Isn't he a little old for this? Why doesn't he hold his pee longer? He also NEVER tells me he needs to go outside. I have tried ringing the bell, but he won't ring it himself and let me know. Any suggestions on how to teach him to stretch out the length of time he holds his pee while running around the house and playing with his toys, us, and our other dog (Riley - a 40lb goldendoodle)? How can I teach him or when can I expect him to let me know he needs to go outside. The places he has pee'd in my house have all been cleaned with both a carpet cleaner and Nature's Miracle poured on it. Help. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |
i have that same issue with Yoda. He can hold it all day, but never tells me (not EVEN a whimper) that he has to go potty. he will squat in a milli second if I am not watching. he is only 5 months though. My female Roxy (RIP) would have accidents a lot and she was 5 years old when she recently passed away. I was told Yorkies were somewhat difficult. I don't know! :confused: |
Potty Training is Frustrating Potty Training is frustrating! It's hard work staying on top of them. I watch him every minute and when I can't, I crate him. If I do this he is reliable. I was just wondering if there is an end in site and all this hard work will pay off and he will tell me when he has to go outside and not pee in my house. |
We got our yorkie when he was a year and a half old and he still was not totally trained and made mistakes. He is now over two and go's outside (finally). I found that if I kept him in a smaller area of the house and not give him the whole run of the house he learned a lot quicker. If I was in the family room I would keep him confined to that space with me or the kitchen etc. Where ever I was he was so to speak.Just so he could not sneak off and do it in a corner some where. If he had to go he would start to stand at the area closest to the door where he went outside. At first I put him out every hour like you are doing now. Yorkies are hard to train and they seem to stay puppies longer than bigger dogs for some reason.. I had a yorkie for ten years and she never learned but I didnt know the tricks back then to train her properly so that was the biggest problem I believe. Dont give up as you are getting into the final stretch and you will start to notice that he is not making as many mistakes.:) You will have lots of support on this site to.Good luck with him. |
Thanks for the words of encouragement. I do notice that he is holding his pee longer and not making as many mistakes. I notice that when I am at work and he is confined to the laundry room (with his artificial grass potty mat) he holds his urine for 6 to 7 hours. I was thinking that I could try and train his bladder to hold the urine longer by watching him (like a hawk) or crating him when I can't. Any suggestions? Thanks. |
He obviously can hold his bladder for a long time so maybe he might be picking up on the smells of some of his mistakes.? It is really hard to get that odor out. I removed a carpet we had as well and that seems to help.They dont like to pee on hard floor either. Also wondering if he is neutered as he might be marking? I am not sure why he wont hold his pee while having the run of the house. Just throwing out some suggestions. |
I have really cleaned the carpet plus dumped the advanced nature's miracle (red bottle) on the spot. My little guy is neutered at 5.5 months. I am currently feeding him in the spots (2 of them) where he likes to go because dogs don't like to pee or poop where they eat. He held his pee for 7 hours yesterday while he was confined to the laundry room and I was at work. But, I always take him out every 2 hours while I am home. I think it might just be a bad habit of going in the same spot - that's why I am feeding him there. Any suggestions or comments???:aimeeyork |
Sounds like a good idea to feed him in those areas. I never thought of that.:)Not sure what else I can offer except good luck with him. He is still very young so he will catch on eventually. |
