Diapers? I plan to take a trip with my puppy but he's just two months old. Has anyone ever used diapers with a boy and how did that work? I don't think that I can pull out puppy pads on the plane so I'm trying to find the best solution so that he doesn't potty in his carrier. |
Some people use belly bands. Just do a search and you'll find out what and where they are. Sorry, but I don't use them. |
Only 2 months old? I wouldn't suggest taking a puppy that young on a long trip or on a plane. There are too many risks-hypoglycemia, stress, catching something due to possibly not having shots yet. Honestly, I'd be more worried about the stress factor than anything. Is there a reason you have to take your puppy with you or is this just something you want to do? If you must take him with you, I'd suggest a belly band, but I strongly suggest you reconsider taking him so young. There are just too many things that could happen to any small dog that young. |
I agree that you should not travel with a yorkie that young. I travel a lot and use professional petsitters for my babies. They have day visits and sleep overs. I would never want to disrupt their routine. You might want to consider having a petsitter stay with your dog while you travel and put the young pup through undue stress of plane travel. PS I've heard that our dogs can get the SWINE FLU -- another reason to keep the pup home so he does not catch anything. |

Thanks for all the concern. I just happen to be picking him up from the breeder right at 8 weeks but had already planned a trip to NY for Christmas. I spoke to the vet and he says that as long as the puppy is in good health that he should be fine. I'll keep looking into it! :thumbs up |
well good luck...take some nutrical along for the trip just in case his sugar drops!! |
Thanks for the tip. I'll do that! |

Did you know that Yorkie puppies should stay with their mother until they are 12 weeks old? The risk of hypoglycemia is high in toy breed puppies in the first three months. They also miss very important lessons in socialization if they are taken from their mom and littermates too soon including bite inhibition. Can you ask the breeder to keep him until after Christmas? Christmas is such a busy time and so many decorations are toxic. It would be so much better for him if you could bring him home after you get back from your trip. |
Some breeders do allow adoptions earlier than 12 weeks. I got Teddy at 10 weeks old - he came from a YTCA breeder with 25 years of experience. |

PS I am not a member, but that's what it states on their website |
8 weeks is super early to bring a pup home then the stress of flying would be very scary to me. Not sure if they will even allow you to bring nutrical on the plane unless you put it in a smaller container. Belly bands are really easy to use. Good luck!! |
It also states that other factors go into the sale such as screening the buyer which I am sure played a role in my breeder's decision to sell me the dog at 10 weeks old. PS I am not a member either but also read their website. To the OP - put the nutrical in a small nalgene leakproof container or other small container but also bring the tube and tell the airport security people it is food for your dog if questioned about the contents. Maybe a note from your vet too. |
Maybe you could ask the breeder to keep the dog until after xmas... I got a dog several years ago and we had already planned a trip and if she had come home at 12 weeks, we would have had to board her 2 weeks later, so we talked with the breeder and she kept her until 16 weeks instead... that way she came home after we got back from vacation. It worked much better for her that way, yes we had to wait a little longer, but she was in a more stable environment where she could be watched closely and we got to enjoy her when we got home! |

You're right. This is taken directly from the Code of Conduct on the YTCA website: 8) All puppies leaving the breeders possession will be a minimum of twelve (12) weeks of age to facilitate adequate socialization as well as appropriate emotional and temperament development through interaction with siblings, dam and other dogs. |
