When will he let me know to go out? I'm pretty amazed so far. I've had Ruger 3 days now, and when I let him out he goes and I praise him. I take him out like the books say: every time he eats, morning, before bed, try to go out every couple of hours at least, etc. Very few accidents in the house. But, how long before he lets me know when he has to go? My girlfriend, who gave me the dog and has a Westy, said he may be doing that now as I seem to sense when he has to go out. I think the goal is to walk him after meals and hope that's it, but I also know there will be times he has to go more than that. Will he let me know, and usually how? I'd hate for him to turn out like my girlfriend's dog. She never trained him, and while he doesn't go in the house he lets you know when he has to go, even at 3 in the morning, which happens almost daily. Other than that he's a great dog. |
a great idea is to use a bell. I went and bought a bell (at a craft store- like you would see at christmas) and hung it on a string on the front door. Every time I took Layla out- I rang the bell and praised her. Then i would start to put her nose close to it so that she was making it ring- and praised her. Now she uses her nose herslef to ring it. It took about 1-2 months for her to really get it but i'ms ure if you use treats with the praise it will go a lot faster! |
What a great idea. I'll give it a try, but you and your dog may have some kind of supernatural talent. Do you know if this has ever worked with anyone else? |

Hi, I'm new to the forum but I am having the same problem with my little Jazzi...she knows it's wrong to go on the floor but still hasn't gotten the whole 'outside' thing. I praise her like crazy when she goes outside and she gets a treat too when she goes potty outside....no potty....no treat....but she is just five months so I am thinking she is still just a baby. I want to use the bell too....we have a friend that uses the bell with his Yorkie.. |
We've been training our dog to go outside too but we have 2 issues: 1. He scratches at the door just to go out to play. Do you allow that? Do you let him out every time he wants to go out? 2. When we hung the bell he just wanted to play with it. Has anyone had this problem? Thanks |
I have a 6 month old yorkie that is crate trained. She does not use her crate for a bathroom, but she will not let me know that she has to go outside when she is just confined to the kitchen and utility area of the house. I do not know what to do, can anyone help? |
