Help! Hi everyone! I'm trying to teach my little baby to shake and I'm doing what I read on here, which is holding the treat in your fist. But all he is doing is trying to get at it with his mouth and when he's frustrated he'll go through all of the tricks that I've already taught him (like sit, down, roll) without me asking! Help! How can I teach him this cute trick?? |
Jackson is a very smart dog, but "Shake" took him FOREVER. For a few weeks, I would randomly just pick up his paw, shake it, and say "Shake" and give him a treat. He just never would do it on his own. I even tried using the word "Paw" thinking maybe it was the word. Then one day, after 2 weeks or so, I asked him to shake and he did it! LOL. I don't know why that trick was so hard for me, but just keep working on it :) He now knows like 13 tricks or so. |
Try touching the back of his "wrist". It's the back of his paw/leg where the little pad is. Most dogs find it uncomfortable and will lift their leg off the ground. Say Yes! and praise him when he does. He will then start raising it when you reach near, that's when you can start adding the cue Shake. |
Thank you both! I'm going to try again tomorrow |
Just touching the back of their paw will usually help them to lift their paw into yours and when you reward them they will learn. This was the ONLY trick that Bandit learned quickly. Everything else took FOREVER!!! He's a backwards dog though lol:) |
ps. touching the back of his paw really helped! he now knows shake!! thank you all! |
