How long did it take to potty train your Yorkie?
 
Hi everyone! I am fairly new here, I just got my little baby about a week and a half ago and i just love her! I don't want to use pee pads because I am home all day and can take her out to go to the bathroom. I take her out several times a day, but of course she still has her accidents. I have been using the "tell bell" where I tap her paw on the bell everytime we go outside. I also have been crate training, but only at night and when I am not home. How long did it take until your yorkie was fully trained? I know it's going to take a while, but I just want to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel! thanks! :-)

Sydney's vet said you can't trust a puppy until about a year old. Until then, do not let your puppy have free run of the house. I did strict crate training where Syd was let out at 7 a.m. for potty, breakfast, and play, then back in the crate. At noon, the same. At five, the same. At eight, she got to come out for her last drink of the night, potty break, and play time. The last time she came out was at 11 for potty and play. If you keep your puppy on a strict food and water schedule, you can time her need to relieve herself. You could almost set a clock to it. Syd gets free run now, but only under strict supervision. If not, she goes into her crate. She's 4 months now and still has the occasional accident, but those are getting to be far and few in between. I have her wee wee pad trained because of the Michigan winters.

First of all, CONGRATS!!!! So exciting to have a new baby at home...But, in answer to your question, you are so fortunate to be home w/your baby, and be able to take her out often...I work, and tried to pad train Apple, and it just never happened...I never got her trained, 'till I removed my carpet in the living room/dining room....I think, no matter what you use, you can never get all of the scent out of the carpet (pad), and she was always tempted...The kitchen and entry hall are tiled...Once I got the carpet removed, it was only a couple of weeks 'till she was trained...She was about 10 months old...It's just lots of praise, when she goes (outside) and always always always gets a treat! Everytime she goes outside I tell her good girl, then I say lets got get a treat!!! Her treats are a steamed green bean or steam carrot piece...She loves them...I think, for us, when I relaxed, and just praised and treated, Apple "got it"....I think your baby will be trained long before my Apple, since you are home, and willing to take the time to be consistent...All the best to you and your new baby:)

I tried several different methods when I was training Sasha and the bell on the door definitely worked the best. I do have to say, it took her about a year, maybe a little more before she was 100% potty trained. She now has free run of the house and knows to run to the door and ring the bell. Patience is a key thing as well as tons of praise. It can get frustrating at times, but just keep positive. One day, they will just "get it".
