Aggressive Play at Dog Park Hello everyone... So my dog gets crazy at the dog park. He is pretty well trained at home, sit stay, sit for food ect. When we get to the park sometimes he just plays nicely and or chases ball...is calm...but it never fails that after a while, he will be playing with a dog, bigger or his same size and the play turns aggressive. He is biting at their necks, sometimes making them squeel and won't stop. I have tried various methods of time outs and all that...bringing plenty of treats....practicing at home by teaching him "ENOUGH", but he won't stop going after the dog after I put him in time out and tell him to "leave it"(meaning the dog). He is crazed when he gets this way....won't listen at all, sits and stays but eyes the dog the entire time waiting for me to let him go...so we just leave.... I would like to continue going but am at my wits end! He is great when walking NEVER EVER AGGRESSIVE TOWARDS DOGS OR PEOPLE.... I'm not sure how to stop his rough play and aggressive outbursts though!Any advice would be appreciated! Thannks!!!! |
Have you tried regularly interrupting his playtime, even when he is calm? He should get used to regular pauses where he must focus on you. I'd also recommend trying to watch closely for signs that he is building up a head of steam. The earlier you catch it, the easier it is for him to snap out of it. I think it's probably something that will take a lot of practice, starting from very calm situations without much stimulus, and gradually moving to situations where he is temped to go wild. |
Thanks for the response! What I do is carry treats with me, and have gotten him into the habit of coming to me when I call him (in the park) and when he comes I make him sit, stay, and then treat. He does well with this....and I do it throughout the time. I think you are right about the paying attention to the signals. I watch him like a hawk in there, and there are no patterns that I have noticed...he just suddenly snaps while he is playing and gets out of control. I would love to take him to training, but it is soooo pricey around here. Petco was an option, but they said that all they would teach him are the things I have already worked on with him. |
Hmmmm. Maybe it's something the other dogs do -- touch a spot on his body or something. Just a guess. I am not really sure what else to suggest, but the more you practice a series of commands, the more ingrained it should become, and in theory at least, make it more likely for him to listen to you even when he is very worked up. It might also just happen after a certain period of time, when he gets sufficiently tired/excited. Any chance that it's resource guarding? |
I don't think it is resource guarding...there is nothing to be possessive over except for me maybe, but it doesn't seem to be this... He is bad with gaurding...I have always practiced taking food and toys from him and he does well with this stuff.... I think I just need to stay away from the park for a while and see how he reacts after a sufficient break. Thanks for all your input!I apreciate it! |
