Carpet Chewing Help! Our 8 mo old yorkie male is chewing and pulling fibers out of our carpet. Have tried the bitter spray - works for about 15 min or so and then he's back at it or just keeps moving around the room to find a spot where it's not been recently sprayed. He has plenty of chew toys, etc - which he does chew but then he'll switch to the carpet. Any suggestions or anyone else experienced this? Our carpet is barely 4 years old so not quite ready to replace it yet. Thanks. |
I have a carpet chewer too. :( I've tried the Apple Bitter but like you said, it last a little while than she's back to it, although Lily continues to go to the same spot. Sorry I don't have any suggestions, but would love to hear what others have done to get their little ones to stop. |
i have one as well. we have blankets down over the carpets for potty training right now so she can't really get to it to pull fibers out, but if the blankets are up or she's in another room besides the living room then she's going to the door way and pulling up loose fibers and chewing on stuff.... i'd like to know what to do as well...!? You guys think the ol' spray bottle might work as well as teaching the "leave it" command over and over? |
I've never had this problem so I'm not sure what would help. The first thing that came to mind was try getting a rope to that he could play tug of war with. This way he'd get to have his pulling/tugging while he's flossing his teeth. :) |
1 Attachment(s) I had a carpet chewer, lol. I tried many things, but the only thing, besides watching her all the time, that helped is her growing up ;). She is almost two and I am happy to say, the carpet chewing is a non issue now :) The carpet she preferred is some pretty old ugly orange/brown carpet that I planned to replace when all the puppers were grown up and out of training stage so it wasn't a huge issue, except for the issue of her swallowing too much. (I didn't leave her alone enough to let her get too much) She did have some pretty colorful poops! I did try using bitter spray, but only worked until it wore off. Here's a picture of her when she was a puppy, with the carpet fiber evidence hanging from her mouth LOL :p |
I have a carpet chewer as well! We got rid of the carpet, so we have just hardwood floors now, but he still does the same thing with rugs. Luckily I have the option of just pulling up the rugs and putting them away.. Something you can't do with carpet unfortunately. The best thing to do is just keep them supervised at all times. In fact I had to throw a rug away a couple of days ago because he ripped it apart when I wasn't watching him. Ahh...Yorkshire terrors  |
My Harley who is eight now was a horrible carpet chewer when he was little. He ripped the fibers out where the wall to wall joins the tile floor with a metal strip over it. Anyway, I fixed him good, and this has worked for my others as well. I got one of those Holloween figures that is motion sensored. Everytime he went near this area, the spooky figure would start making noises. It scared the bee jesus out of him and he gave up on carpet chewing. It's holloween now so you can get a few, if you have more than one chew area. Christmas figures work too. If they move, and make noise, even better!:D |

THANKS!! |
I hope it works for you, it sure did for me!:) |
I have a similar problem, but mine is digging in the carpet and yard instead of chewing the carpet. Any suggestions? I'm thinking about a sand box like I've seen them do on tv lots of times. I was thinking about getting a short plastic bin for easy storage (the ones you can roll under your bed) and filling it with sand and taking it in the back yard and letting him dig in it for a while then roll it into the garage when playtime is over. Any suggestions has anybody else used the sandbox method for digging? |

I used white venigar in a spray bottle. I mixed it with water so it was not so strong. But beleive whe i spray it on furniture and mostly my carpet she wont even go near it. I am so use to the venigar smell now that it does not stink for me but it makes her sneeze if she goes and even sniffs it :) |
I was told Lexi would grow out of it. She's now 1 years old and likes to tear out the carpet where it meets the tile. She does it when I'm not paying attention to her or when I leave the house for a few hours. It's a new apartment I've only lived there 2 months and she's made 3 wholes. I spray that bitter tasting stuff but it doesn't last long. It's so frustrating. She also now pulls all the rubber stoppers off the the door stop and slaps it around to get that annoying spring action. To top it off she scratched my couch just to get me to throw a ball to her. It's now impossible to work from home. Any help would be appreciated. |
Nikko is a little over a year old, and he just started chewing carpet about a month ago. His favorite spots are where the carpet meets the tile, but he sometimes picks small holes in the middle of the carpet. After we noticed this problem starting, we started trying to head it off from as many angles as we could, because I know that the more carpet chewing becomes a habit, the harder it is to break. Here's what we did, and it has drastically cut back on his carpet chewing - it's practically non-existent again now a few weeks later: 1. Bitter apple spray immediately when we saw him chewing 2. Crushed spicy-ish red pepper sprinkled on the favorite chew spots (the kind of stuff that Pizza Hut offers to sprinkle on pizza). 3. Blankets or sheets over some of the tile to carpet transition areas 4. More walks (it's hard to chew when you're exhausted and asleep!) 5. More bully sticks per week 6. We actually also found some clay roof tiles to put over his #1 favorite chewing spot, so there's no WAY he could possibly chew there again. They're not beautiful, but they're prettier than chewed up carpet, and we hope they're temporary (a few more weeks?). Hope that helps a little! Lauren & Nikko |
