Biting Puppy Wondering if anybody can help, I have a harness for Rebel (13 weeks old) and I want to start teaching him to walk on a leash and be able to take him outside when it gets dark. He GOES crazy when I try to put the harness on him, he bit me 4 times and actually drew blood. I did finally get the harness on him and left it on him for a few hours hoping he will get used to it. I can't leave it on him all the time because he gets his mouth under it and starts biting on it. Has anybody else ever experienced this. Truly, I mean he goes CRAZY!!! |
Congratulations on being owned by a Yorkie. My first one picked me about a month and a half ago. Sydney is a biter, too. We're working on it. She didn't like having her harness put on at first, but it is necessary to get your puppy use to it and the leash. As for the biting, try to distract her with a chew toy, or spray her in the mouth. There is special spray just for it. As for the harness, maybe wear gloves when putting it on him??? The other thing to do is perhaps take him someplace fun so he'll associate the harness with fun. That's one thing I did with Sydney. As soon as I pull out her backpack, she's trying to jump inside (her harness attaches to it). Good luck. |

Thank you again for the advice. :aimeeyork |
I would NOT spray your puppy..he is way to young. You need to have some treats in your hand and take it slow...He is frightened on what you are trying to do and that is why he is fighting you. What kind of harness is it? It sounds as if it is to big and you really should not leave the harness on all the time. Can you show a picture? |

I just realized we're both in Michigan. We live in the U.P. I just ordered not that long ago a Buddy Belt for Sydney. It's easy to use and fits well. Syd turned 4 months today. Because Syd is on a strict potty schedule, I don't give treats in between meals until she's housebroken. If you don't want to spray him, the best alternative is to switch his attention to a toy. Also, if he's biting you, push your hand into his mouth. This will force him to let go. Second, and this one is controversial, flip him over on his back until he calms down. Let us know how it goes. |

The glove was a great suggestion. |
13 weeks and he drew blood? This isn't just a harness problem You're little guy doesn't trust you he sees things as threats and he is trying to protect himself He needs to be touched You have to get him used to you handling him I don't mean jst petting I mean ... he needs to allow and trust you to tuch him and open his mouth and brush him and everything else without being frightened |

UMM, that is strange because I am the one, that feeds him, bathes him, holds him and loves him more than anybody else in our home. He drew blood from the bottom part of my fingernails where it is tender, his little teeth are sharp. I pick him up on a daily basis and play with him and he gives me kisses and I give him kisses back. He does allow me to open his mouth, I have on several occasions done this and have never had a problem with him, it's only when I put the harness on that he gets like this. If this is a trust issue, than I am confused and not really sure what else to do. As I stated I fee him and have fed him by hand on a number of occasions, this little guy was born in my home not brought in a few months old. I feed him from a bottle to help supplement because he was so small. When I bath him we have fun and he is a very good boy but does not like when I or anybody else dries him the towel. He sits on my lap and lays on my tummy. We play tug a war and cuddle. We play outside together but I also take away stuff that can hurt him. So if you have any ideas how I can change what I am doing to get him to "trust" me please let me know. thank you, |
To just address the harness thing, you could spray it with bitter apple spray so he won't bite it. Nala would always get her jaw under it and go crazy chewing and biting it, and then continue to go crazy when she couldn't get her mouth out from under it lol. Good luck! |
