Potty Training Tips/ HELP for working people Potty Training Tips/ HELP for working people who can not be in the home ALL THE TIME to follow a regime/routine. My husband and I feel like nothing is working. Our six-month-old yorkie is regressing to the little we felt she had learned due to the cold & rainy weather. She freezes to death and hates to go out. She only uses the pee pad while she is her room alone and is in very much need. We can have a daily routine, we both work, so we can try to have a routine in the mornings, evenings, Fridays and on weekend. We even started giving her favorite treats for when she goes where we asked her to. We're starting to get desperate for advice. Thx! |
Even if she's down to two meals a day, you really need someone to play with her at noon. She's still very young. The routine is get up at 7 (or whenever you need to, just stay consistent even on weekends). Immediately take the puppy to the potty spot. Praise her when she does well. I don't recommend treats if you're potty training. It makes them go more. Just praise like crazy. Be dramatic. When you see her tail wag, you know you've done well. Give her free time in the kitchen (supervised). At 7:30, take her back to the potty spot. After she goes, put her in an x-pen with her bed and potty pads. Again, someone should see her at noon. When you return home (6p.m.), take her to her potty spot. Free period in the kitchen until 7. Food and water at 7, Potty at 7:30, free time until 8:30 and then crate. You should let her out again at 10:30 or 11. Place her back in her crate. This is an example schedule from the book, "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days." I've been using one of the other schedules and it helps. It has taken longer than 7 days, but she's now going to the pads on her own. Good luck. |
https://www.pottypatch.com/ver12/index.asp If you check your local craigslist, I bet you can find a very reasonable dog walker in your area to come at noon time!! Its a very very long day for her to be alone!! do you have anyone that can either take her outside for a walk or even come and play with her for a half hour or 45 minutes!! |
I'm somewhat in the same boat, but I have forced myself to come home every day for lunch (luckily I only live about 9 miles from work) although its been kinda an expensive pain the bootie, I enjoy taking time out for myself -- finally, and for Lillie Jo. It's a win/win situation. As for the routine, thats excellent advice. I've had Lillie Jo for about 3 weeks now and its taken 2 of those weeks to get her to use the piddle pad. We get up at 7am, potty, she goes again at 8:30 before I leave. I come home at 1pm, she gets out she goes, and she plays for 40 min or so, then I come home at 5 and do the same thing. By this time of the day she semi-knows where she needs to go and I don't have to direct her, she just goes right over to her piddle pad. Its awesome. Now, for #2---well, we're still working on that. She just will not poo on that dang thing! Like I said, we're still workin. ;) |
