Tough discovery... male peeing on my baseboards. Help me please! Hi there, Having a rough time - as I am discovering my "pad trained" 11 month old yorkie, Theo is NOT always using his pad. I am finding that he is lining some hallways and walls with pee! I really don't know what I am going to do. I watch him as much as possible. I take him outside often (though he will NOT go pee or poop outside!, can't figure that out), and I take him to his pad frequently. Is crate training something I should look at doing? I consider belly bands as a LAST resort... really don't want to have to go that route, but I just don't know where to turn. Any ideas? |
You are probably going to have to resort to belly bands. Once they start marking I don't think there is anyway to get them to stop. I have scrubbed, disinfected, deoderized, scolded, whatever, and he still marks. |
That's right, belly bands are the way to go, my two males mark and no amount of careful watching can stop it. Thank god they invented belly bands. |
Frustrating, to say the least. Sorry he is doing this. Yes, I would recommend belly bands also when he's inside and not closely supervised. They can be pretty sneaky. |
Where is the best place to buy belly bands? Can someone help me by explaining what kind of pads you put in them? And how often do you change the pad? Thank you in advance. |

The best pad is one used for incontinence in people. I have found the cheapest to be the "Options" brand at Walmart. I get the longest size and cut them in half and use half at a time. Change them the same as you would if you had a baby in diapers. Be sure to take them off when you take him to go potty. |
I agree - the Walmart brand incontinence pad works great. Yorkie Haven Rescue sells belly bands in our boutique. You can look at our site by clicking on the link below. |
Have you had him neutered? I got mine neutered at about one year and it stopped his marking. Of course, you are going to have to scrub all the urine smell off the walls so that the odor is no longer there. Also, mine will not go on a paper that he has already used. He wants a fresh one each time. |
I agree that neutering will improve his behavior. (Unless he's neutered already.) I've always owned males, and after they were neutered, they stopped marking in the house. I've heard many people say that once they start marking, even neutering doesn't help. But honestly, that has not been my experience. Other than that, belly bands are the way to go when you can't watch him. |
Belly bands solved this problem with us. At first I felt like it was admitting defeat ... that Dunkin wasn't ever going to be potty trained, but instead it's just such a relief. He LOVED marking the baseboards, and he still tries sometime with the belly bands on. The fact is, though, that a lot of times I go to change the pad out, assuming he must have had an accident, and it's a pleasant surprise to find it clean and dry. The only thing I hate is that when I remove the band, he smells like pee sometimes, so we keep puppy wipes handy. I only wish we would have gotten them sooner ... it would have saved the carpet! |
