coins in can??
 

Our little guy has found his voice and he has been using it. He is only 11 weeks old, so I'm not sure when it is appropriate to start addressing the barking issue. We have just been ignoring him when he's been barking, but it has seemed to have gotten worse. Today I used the coins in the can trick, but that just made him bark even more. Should I just let the barking go for now since he is still so young? Should I not use the can since it made him bark more, or should I contine with it until he gets it????:confused:

First of all I'm shocked he's barking so young, are you sure it's a bark, and not a whine? The way coins in a can works, is that the noise has to be slightly aversive, and loud enough to get their attention. Your voice should be calm. You say "No" or "Uh-uh" in a moderate but stern voice, and shake the can. If he barks again, you repeat, you keep repeating until you have the last shake. I had to use a Christmas tin with Joey; it made a louder noise than a soda can. If he even sees the can now he stops barking. Remember barking is a wired in trait, and you will never stop it completely, they will bark at strangers or noises, but they can learn to stop after a few barks. You must be dedicated to teach this and very consistent. It can't be haphazard where he wins some of the time, or else you actually are reinforcing him to bark. Some people us a water spray bottle, but I like the coins in a can better, because both the stimulus are similar, both are noises and can easily be learned by cause and effect. When I say easily I don't mean one trial learning, this takes weeks and months of practice. I had a can available in every room. Joey is allowed to bark at certain things, and if he sees a dog in the park, he has learned to ring a bell and I will open the door and he can run outside to bark at the intruder, so instead of barking now I hear this little "ring". :D

Well Yesterday I took it outside when it was Polo's potty time, and he saw a dog he goes crazy and starts barking. I pressed the button for about 5 seconds he tilted his head looked at me like WHAT THE HECK and Completely stop barking.

Wow, your little boy is very mature, I thought most didn't bark till 5-6 months and later. I see nothing wrong with teaching this from the beginning. The trick is not to get frustrated or angry, if they sense this adrenaline will kick in and they will bark more. There are some people who suggest treating different barks differently. For example, if they bark because they hear something late at night, they suggest picking up the dog, and thanking it and walking around the house to check and see if everything's in order. Dogs were bred to warn people of intruders, and a dog really shouldn't be punished for doing this. I tried it and it does seem to work; now late at night, if he hears something, thunder or the guy next door's trash cans, I can just say, "Thanks, it's ok", and that's enough for him. You feel kind of stupid doing this at first, but I think it's helpful to let them know that sometimes it's ok to bark.

Coins in the can just made it worse...so he thinks you have joined him in the barking. Smart boy.

So figure out what it is first then and then you do the next steps

E- Eliminate the cause
S Systematic Desensitization

T- Take awa the reward
R- Reward an Incopatible Behaviour
A- Accuulimate the dog
I- Improve the Dogs assoiation
N -Negatives Notice the negative in training to stop baarking is last not first
as in using the can of pennys

So first figure out why then you can go from there and do the next steps.
So for look at me- I get a leadership program starter like nothing in life is free.
Offensive- are nothing to play with, you need help
Under employed the dog needs games and work
Defensive barkers are scared dogs an they need help to gain confidence
Enthusiastic barkers - need to be toaugh things that are incompatable with barking and a dog can not bark laying down.
reduce depenency is a dog with sepration anxiety and should be treated for it.

I also wanted to add that generally if a pup gets a lot of exercise, they won't bark as much because they're so tired! I can't stress it exercise enough - wear him out! ;) For a pup, that's not hard to do.

Thank you everyone! Last night when I tried the can there was a lot going on so I think that had something to do with it. Today, after we played for a while and went potty I put him back in his crate and he started in again with the barking so I shook the can a couple of times and he stopped and went right to sleep. Yeah! Thanks again everyone! :D

you might find telling him off for barking is giving him attention. Sky would rather have attention from me telling her off than not have any attention. What i did with her was to ignore the barking and leave the room if i'm there. I wont go in the room (or let her out of her crate if thats where she is) until i can count to 10 while she's quiet. She seems to have stopped barking most of the time now.

I do agree that sometimes ignoring works. But with some dogs... they won't stop! And ignoring doesn't necessarily always work because then you can never correct the behavior. But I totally think it all depends on the situation and sometimes ignoring is the perfect solution. :D

One of they most effective ways to deal with any unwanted behaviour in dogs is to ignore it.
Once you ignore it and there is a breath between the barks you reward that breath and grow the silence from there.

Feed with attention or food that which you want ingnore that which you do not.

i bought one off them bark free , the one u plug in, when dog barks it gives off a sound that we cant hear, just a click sound, 50.00 pounds it cost me, and my older dog kept attacking it, what a load off rubbish,, i cud not take it back cause i had it more that 2 weeks, just to keep trying to c if it wud work,, ps there is indoor ones and outdoor ones, the girl in petsathome, give me wrong one, and had to take it back for indoor, she said they all the same,, silly witch,, the oudoor one is more powerful, it cud have damaged my furbabies ears, long story short i did not work,,:D
