How to train to do #2 in yard Currently I walk Yogi (1 year old male that I just got back in August) in the morning around 6:30 or 7 am and again in the evening around 6:00 or 6:30 pm. He gets 1/3 cup of food in the morning before I go to work and another third in the evening and treats in between. With this schedule, we have very few accidents in the house. Yogi poops on these walks and pretty much refuses to do it in our fenced in yard. Is there any way to get him to poop in our yard? When the temp starts to drop down to 30, 40 degrees I'm pretty sure neither one of us is going to want to be outside for too long. Any suggestions? |
I don't see why not. I guess you need to spend time out there with him and treat him as soon as he does. Instead of walking him when you know it's his time to poop, take him in the yard and allow him to be free to roam. When you see him go praise the heck out of him and treat. My daughter has a neighbor who's two dogs go in the middle of the street daily. They were trained not to go in their yard. He never walks them, they have lot's of room to run free, however, when it's time to go out in the middle of the street he takes them. LOL Amazing. Of course he picks up too. |
I had this problem after I was trying to indoor train and switched to outside. I stood in one spot with his leash on and ignored him until he went and when he did he was praised. Now when he goes out I just watch him from the door he goes and comes right back. I don't know how the winter will be though. |

Males can be this way. They need to sniff everything around before they get the urge to go. Buddy, he'll go anywhere when he feels the need. Walks or in my daughter's yard. However, my daughter's MinPin, being raised by it's other grandparents in the Bronx, get's walked and has been for 8yrs. When he comes for a visit he will not go in the back yard! ever. LOL He is use to concret. I am sure, since he's still young, you can train him. I hope so. Wish I still had my yard for those winter months. Walking in snow, ice and rain is a bit@@. |
