you got spanked so i have been living with my mom and i have been still training him on not marking territory in the house. (hes 1 year old) so he was running around the house and he marked my moms new sofa she seen him and right when i walked in she spanked him on his butt not to hard but she spanked him he turned around and growled at her even showed his teeth. i just stood there like wow is he really growling like that? then he ran off with his ears down and ran to lay on the bed. i dont know if he was just mad or what but why would he be growling and showing his teeth like that? he is a sweet heart not a fighter?? or is it him giving her a attitude? |
I'd growl too! I don't swat my dogs cause they are so tiny but I've swatted my chunky 5 yr olds butt a couple of times like you described and he's growled at me! then he gets the corner and that makes a bigger impression on him. Maybe try a time out for him when he piddles like that with a NO and showing him the peepee spot. Spanking is usually when WE get overwhelmed it doesn't ever do much for the kid/puppy. I've learned from experience on my boys. |
Your Mom shouldnt have spanked him but he shouldnt show his teeth ever and that is the start of aggressive behavior. I think he was just upset your mom hit him. Marking is instinctive and I dont think your gonna be able to train him not to do it. I would get bellybands to put on him |
You should never hit a dog, this will make him aggressive, you can't blame the dog for showing it's teeth, he's doing what he's suppose to do. Mom needs to find a new way to discipline, but marking is instinctive and very hard to control once established. Has you dog been neutered, this will cut down on marking, and neutered dogs usually only mark outside. I agree with Chachi, use bellybands. Time outs won't work either, they are not human, and don't understand why they are being given the "time out." |

He is more then allowed to say no. Spanking is not the most effective form of traininga dog not to pee in the house. He will go find a place to do it while hiding it from you. I t will alos teach him very fast to fear hands and people bending over him and he will growel more and hide and fer being picked up and even go to a bite to defend himself. JL |
Just to clearify Growling is just dog talk. trun it off and a dog has not way to tell you that what you are doing is hurting, making him afraid or not ok by him. Stopping the grr causes dogs to go to a bite as they have no other way to say no. A soft grr is not aggression at all it is a simple Please stop. Saying no is an allowable behaviour in all types of living beings. JL |
Your Mom shouldnt have spanked him. So he gave your mom a warning, and probably next time if your mom spanks him again, the outcome will probably will be worst..............like taken a bite out of your mom! Dog's isn't kid's......so you have to come up with a different approach for him to understand you and your mom! If I was your dog, I would had showed my teeth as well, and probably would had bitten your mom! And maybe your mom, would think about putting a cover on her new sofa, in case of anymore future accident's!!!!!! And then take the cover off her "new sofa", and wash it!!! |
mine don't like being separated from the house so to me it's like they do understand it. It kills Zoe to not be with us but maybe that's just her personality. I think if you try other methods as mentioned above, you will not see that behaviour much. |
During my research about Yorkies, before I got Jo-jo, I noticed that almost all the dog philosophies I knew, that I used to train service dogs (labs) before, were different from Yorkie owner's philosophies. Much different. So when I finally got Josephine I tried to find a happy medium between both styles of training, but I tend to favor those ideals I used on my labs and to be honest it's worked fabulously. I'm telling you this because I know on Yorkietalk some of my philosophies aren't agreed with and I want you to keep that in mind when I give you my advice. I'm new to this whole Yorkie thing and while everything with my little Jo-jo has gone great all dogs are different and I don't know if my dog is the norm or not. Anyways my first instinct is that the marking is a dominance behavior and since your is old enough you really should look into getting him neutered. If he hasn't been marking for a long time neutering could stop it all together, just as long as a habit hasn't been formed. Also new things brought into the home, like new furniature and guest's belongings can often cause dogs to mark so if possible take him up to the new object ask him to sit and give him a treat, play with him a little, let him investigate the new object, ect. As for the growling and baring of teeth, that is NOT okay. I don't care if he was spanked, when a dog is hit on purpose (though you should never hit your dog) or accidentally they should respond with tucking their tails and/or whining to show their discomfort. Submissive behavior. While growling is one thing and I don't really see it as something too dominate, baring the teeth is another thing entirely. I suggest an alpha roll, but not in the traditional sense. I was taught the alpha roll a bit differently than others learned it. All you do is gently get your dog to lie down, put him in-between your legs and roll him over onto his stomach. At first he'll try to wiggle his way out, but after awhile he'll calm down. Once that happens it's up to you when to release him. Do this once a day and whenever he shows dominate behaviors. Have your mom do it too and see if things improve. I really do believe in this version of the alpha roll and paired with plenty of exercise and command training usually solves most aggression problems. Good luck. |

Aggression is not a growl it is just language as for showing teeth I have seen many a dog smile in fear and it is no more then them being afriand and not aggression at all. Now if there had been a air snap that would have been true aggression. JL |
