Calming a yorkie down to train Hi there i'm new to this site and i just have a question. I am the proud (sometimes) owner of 4 month old Yorkie. Any idea how i can calm a Yorkie down to teach her tricks? Every time i try to teach her a trick she gets all hyper and runs everywhere. I tried training her after a walk but then she really has no interest in it. I was thinking about teaching her on her leash? any ideas would be greatly appreciated. |

So Puppy has puppy brain and like all babies has a focus problem. Normal. What to do? go slow work on eye contact and hay focus but keep it short and easy. Babies have a hard time focusing. eye contact and when she is still feed that with calm praise and food. On leash is a good idea. try it. I work on short things like sit or down to start and teach her good things come with a little work. Have a look at clicker solutions web site it has a lot of good article on getting started with a puppy. Now if eye contact does not work and she still a busy girl you can do things like may stays and a protocol by Karen overall called the protocol for relaxation. Plus there are a few really good books one call Control unleashed and the one I like and am reading as it is the pre step to control unleashed is Chill out Fido. How to calm your dog by Nan Kene Arthur. She is a wee little baby and I am not sure how long she has been home but the whole world is so big and new and wow exciting who really wants to do tricks, Girls just want to have fun... So make what you do fun as calm as you can. JL |
I also have a four month old yorkie and I feel as soon as I get home from work is the best time to keep her atten and get her to focus since she's hungry and willing to work for her snacks. After her walk Madison is also still a bit hyper afterwards so that's when I give her dinner in a kong so she can work the energy off in getting the food out. What are you using for treats? Maybe you need to up the entice lol |
Little pills called Yorkie Downers. :D Just impossible to find. But they work well when you can get them. JK... Welcome to YT! and Congrats on your new baby! |
I had the same problem with Jasper. But once I had him sitting and staying everything else got much easier. I would just hold a treat above his head to focus him in my direction, then say sit and wait. Even if his attention strayed, the moment he finally sat he got the treat and a "good boy". Rinsed and repeated this untill he knew the score and then focused on having him stay by first having him sit, then saying "stay" with a treat on the floor next to him. If he moved before I told him, i'd swipe the treat ...rinse and repeat. From there things got much easier. Been with us now for about 5 weeks... absolutely no training before hand. He now sits, stays, lays down, rolls over, kisses, gives paw, stands up.... goin well:D Good luck. oh, if she's attentive to you when getting her food ready then use that. Make her sit before each time you feed her. At least that'll get her assosiated with the command. |
