Is my puppy aggressive? We've had our puppy for two days now and he has been playing well with the kids. I have three children, 1, 7, and 9. Yesterday I noticed that when he was playing, all the sudden he got real aggressive with my youngest. I put our puppy on his back until he gave in. (Our youngest has not had too much to do with the puppy. He just sits and watches him.) Today the kids were playing with him again and he did the same thing to my oldest, she is almost 10. I did the same thing and put the puppy on his back until he gave in. I can't tell if he is just playing or if he is really trying to be aggressive with them. What do you guys think? Thanks!:) |
What is he doing that you think hes aggressive? Is he growling because puppies growl when they play. They also chew but you dont want to encourage that |
You need to explain what it was and what type of behavior he was showing in order for anyone to tell you if it was aggressive or not Puppies esp active guys like Yorkies will tend to play rough sometimes and just like with a toddler you have to train them what is acceptable behavior and what is not What works with puppies better than putting them on their back because I'm a little afraid.... knowing my guys when they were puppies if I did that they would have thought that was a game When puppies get rough you need to come in and with a loud stern voice say NO! and then all attention and play ends right there and if the behavior is esp bad you can do the same with a little neck grab which means you take the skin by the neck .... and you do this just gently enough to pull them away You do not need to be forceful with this But it is important to stop this before it becomes a permanent part of their behavior |
Do not flip your puppy on it's back to repremand him. That is old school and will only make the puppy more aggressive. This action is no longer used. How old is your puppy? |
I will say as well we need more info to make a call on if it is aggression. Dogs talk in grrrs. Do not roll him as it will make him pafraid and if he is not aggressive now it will cause aggression due to fear. JL |
puppies nibble at each other, they have to learn not to do that with humans. When sky started 'playing with teeth' after she came home every time she did it i made a yelping noise then immediately refused to play and looked away for a minute or so before continuing the game. After about a week she stopped. Also - are you teaching her to play via toys - so the puppy can learn that biting the toy is fine but not the person holding it. |
