Housebreaking! Really?? I am having trouble housebreaking my Yorkie puppy. (10 mo's) I have been having trouble since I first got her, when she was 9wks old. I have tried everything from crate training to potty pads and all things in between. Nothing's working! She will go potty outside but likes going inside, on the floor, much better. She will not potty during walks, either. When she potty's in the house, she runs immediately to her crate. If I see her in there, I know exactly why she's there, just by the way she looks and also by her body language. I get so angry when she goes in the house. I feel that I am at the end of my rope with this housebreaking thing. She is so sweet and loveable but I am afraid I might have to let her go if I cannot find a solution. Can someone PLEEEAASE help me? PLEEEAASE!!  |
Same Problem I just joined this website today because I need answers for the same problem. My yorkie is almost seven and I have the same problem. We've had him for six years and it's always been the same thing. He pees when we are gone and sometimes at night. First we tried to crate train him, but he would pee inside his crate. So we took him out and put him down the basement, with his food, water, bed and radio, and he would pee so much that the smell of the pee would come up in the vents. So we put him in the kitchen and let him run around in there. He is still peeing in the house all the time. By the way he also has seperation anxitey, which makes it worst. My husband has had it. He wants to get rid of him, but I just can't. It's like getting rid of a family member. I have a 3 year old son and one on the way. I'm so sick of my house smelling like urine. It doesn't matter how much I bleach the floor it still smells. Is there anyone that can help me!!! |
Dunkin is just over six months, and I've resorted to belly bands. He wears it whenever he is in the house outside of his crate. I'm still keeping a schedule and working on normal housebreaking methods, but I just can't take cleaning up dribbles of pee all day long. It's a huge relief to have him wearing a belly band. We make him wear it if we go to other people's houses too. Oh, and Dunkin also LOVES peeing in his crate. He treats it similarly to a litter box. Before the belly band, I would catch him walking up to it to pee, even though we had just been outside. It's frustrating, but honestly, the belly band takes a lot of the pressure away while they keep learning. |
Training Hi...I have yorkies and shih-tzu's and never had the problem ya'll are having. You have to be very consistant. You should be taking them out to potty every 1/2 to 1 hour. I rewarded them with very tiny treats when they would potty...that is the only time they got treats. A friend of mine uses the new bell thingy....it is really working for her puppy. So neat! Maybe try that. |
Agree with JonlyCajunqueen! I took Nolee out every 30 minutes to 1 hr. Within 10-15min after a nap and after eating. I stopped feeding him after 6:30pm and he did great! Be consistent and best of luck! |
Its all about consistent supervision and catching them in the act to correct the behavior. Reward them when they successfully potty as expected. Do not let them run loose in the house unsupervised - until after they are fully potty trained. Too many times, ppl get distracted or try to multi-task while the puppy is loose in the house - then the puppy just finds a quiet place to do their business. Its not easy - we had to literally put our lives on hold while potty training - but it was worth it. |
Aww - for the record - I did not put that unhappy face in the memo section above...I don't know how it got there? I couldn't edit it out.... Anyhow, it certainly was not my intention. I only post happy faces! :) |

I had the same problem with Bella. We couldn't figure out when she would go after eating. So we stuck a paper to our fridge and marked down how long after she ate and drank it would take her to go. Now we haven't had a problem in a cpl weeks. For at night all i do is stop feeding after 630. And then go for a run right before bed and she sleeps like a baby all night. I know It's frustrating but they'll learn! |
